Pp. 31-43; 1 plate with 11 figures. Vertical crease in plate. In 1. Wyman is designated on the title page as Prof. Anat. and Phys. Med. Dep. Hampden and Sidney College. In 2. Wyman is designated on the title page as Hersey Prof. Anat. in Harvard University. Burt G. Wilder was a student of Jeffries Wyman. In his biographical memoir "Jeffries Wyman Anatomist 1814-1874", in Leading American Men of Science (1910), pp. 171-209, edited by David Starr Jordan, Wilder discusses on pp. 186-87 the large paper copy of Savage and Wyman's publication on the gorilla. Wilder begins by noting "The journal was in octavo form, and the large plates had to be folded. Evidently, Wyman realized the importance of the subject since he took the unusual trouble to have the article reprinted in quarto form with the plates on heavier paper and the text repaged and very slightly rearranged but not otherwise altered, excepting as to the title page. . . . How many copies of this quarto edition were printed I have not been able to learn." Clearly Wyman did the same for other publications of his that were originally in a smaller, octavo format. In 1852 the generic name Gorilla for the gorilla was proposed. Troglodytes had been proposed as the generic name for the chimpanzee in 1812. See Colin P. Groves, "A History of Gorilla Taxonomy".
