The author begins by discussing previous research on the subject, which focused on the effects of neutral salts and lime on soils. The author suggests that these studies indicate that the displacement of bases in the soil occurs in practically theoretical chemical proportions. The author then presents their own research on the absorption of lime by soils. They used calcium bicarbonate solutions containing varying amounts of carbonic acid to treat soils and measured the amount of lime absorbed. Their results show that, within the ranges of concentration tested, the action of ammonium chloride on soil follows the law of mass action and must therefore be considered a purely chemical reaction. The acidity developed when certain soils are treated with neutral salts may be explained as an adsorption phenomenon because the equilibrium follows the usual adsorption isotherm. The acidity has, however, been traced generally to the presence of aluminium salts in solution, and their presence suggests a more fundamental change than purely physical adsorption. This book contributes to our understanding of soil chemistry and provides valuable insights for researchers and practitioners in agriculture and soil science. The first human implantation of an LAA device occurred in 2001, and since then four devices have received CE mark approval. These devices are being widely used in Europe for LAA closure in patients who are poor candidates for long-term oral anticoagulation. In the US, the WATCHMAN device (Boston Scientific) is anticipated to receive FDA approval imminently for AF patients who are warfarin-eligible. This approval is projected to significantly expand the indications for LAA closures worldwide. Thus, the volume of procedures is anticipated to escalate. This book discusses the epidemiology of AF as a cause of stroke; the use of LAA closure in the reduction of thromboembolism with AF; early surgical approaches and novel surgical devices for LAA closure; and current percutaneous approaches and devices available for LAA closure.
