Brown textured cloth binding with blind tooled double border to each cover and to the front cover a central gilt Roman portrait vignette, surrounded by gilt titles, gilt titles to the spine, page edges rough trimmed, brown pastedowns and endpapers. Condition good, binding rubbed at corners and edges, front hinge crudely reinforced, inscriptions to front endpapers, title frontis prelims and ends spotted, tiny light water stain to part of upper edge of pages to last half of the book, other than this the pages and plates are generally very clean, with just a few faint spots to a few pages here and there. With numerous illustrations on 52 plates, 2 folding maps (1 hand-coloured), index and list of subscribers.

She was introduced to the diarist Francis Kilvert in 1871, and we are told that she was then 35 and the grand-daughter of George Stothert, the manager of the famous Bath engineering firm Stothert and Pitt.
