Er sollte zudem die Grundlagen der Landesnatur erforschen und in Aussaatversuchen die Wachstumsbedingungen neuer ertragreicher Kulturpflanzen finden, um der notleidenden Landbevölkerung u.a. höhere Ernteerträge zu ermöglichen. Rainer Loose nimmt die Zeit Schüblers in Tübingen in den Blick: Er war nicht nur Professor für Botanik und württembergische Vaterlandskunde, sondern auch Rektor sowie Vorstand des Botanischen Gartens, den er gegen massive Widerstände modernisierte und erweiterte. Mit Unterstützung der Centralstelle des Württembergischen landwirtschaftlichen Vereins baute er ein landesweites meteorologisches Beobachternetz auf, die gesammelten Klimadaten veröffentlichte er in jährlichen Witterungsberichten. Zudem katalogisierte er die Blüten- und Kulturpflanzen Württembergs. Für die Landesvermessung steuerte er eine Vielzahl barometrischer Höhenmessungen bei, beschrieb Bau und Gestalt der Landschaft und entwarf eine geologische Übersichtskarte Südwest-Deutschlands, auch als Grundlage der dreidimensionalen Charte-en-relief Württembergs.
