Neuware - Der anlässlich der gleichnamigen Ausstellung in der Stuttgarter Galerie 'Schacher - Raum für Kunst' erschienene Katalog gleicht einem Werksverzeichnis des 1983 in Addis Abeba, Äthiopien, geborenen Künstlers. Neben allen zwischen 2009 und 2016 entstandenen Ölgemälden ist eine repräsentative Auswahl der zeitgleich gemalten und gezeichneten Arbeiten auf Papier abgebildet - ausgeführt mit Graphit, Lack, Ölpastell, Kohle, teils als übermalte Monotypien.2009 aus Äthiopien nach Deutschland gekommen, weiß Tesfaye Urgessa, wie es ist, sich fremd und unter Beobachtung zu fühlen. In seinen gleichermaßen surreal wie sinnlich anmutenden Gemälden greift er eigene biografische Erfahrungen auf und präsentiert buchstäblich vielschichtige Körper- und Möbelfragmente. Haben wir noch die Beobachtungs-Hoheit oder werden wir selbst beobachtet Requisiten und integrierte Kommentare wie 'lost and never found' laden die Bilder narrativ auf.Es geht dem Künstler nicht darum, gesehene und erlebte Situationen und Personen adäquat eins zu eins abzubilden, sondern um das Aufgreifen und Weiterausarbeiten eines Gefühls oder einer Begegnung. Konkrete Formen wie Möbel und Lampen und abstrakte Formsplitter sind zusammen mit den Figuren in einen reizvollen Dialog gesetzt. Verschiedene Perspektiven und Körper-Torsi sind zum unrealistischen, aber ästhetischen Ensemble vereint.'Mich interessiert die psychische Verfassung des Menschen, wie sie sich in Beziehung zu politischen und gesellschaftlichen Verhältnissen herausbildet.
