Widmung des Autors für Barbara + Hans Holländer. - Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - Aus dem Text: Bisher sind drei Beschreibungen des als Astronomisches Schach, Astrologisches Schach, Sphärenschach, Himmelsschach oder Sternschach bezeichneten Spiels bekannt: die des arabischen Gelehrten al- Mas'udi (gest. 345/956), diejenige im Spielebuch des spanischen Königs Alfons X. von Kastilien (reg. 1252-82) von 1283 (Abb. 1) und die des persischen Lexikographen al-Amoli aus dem 14. Jahrhundert (Abb. 2). Das Spiel hat bisher keine besondere Aufmerksamkeit gefunden, was wohl auch daran liegt, daß es bei al-Mas'udi nur als vorletzte der sechs von ihm aufgezählten Arten des Schach erscheint und die Forschung es deshalb bis heute zu den "Abarten", Abkömmlingen oder Varianten des "eigentlichen" Schach zählt. Für die meisten Schachforscher gilt, was Tassilo von Heydebrand und der Lasa schrieb: "Die mitunter üblichen Abarten des gewöhnlichen Schachspiels, wie Drei- und Vierschach auf vergrößerten Brettern, nebst anderen Erweiterungen und Umgestaltungen des Spiels interessieren mich nicht".
