Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - This study offers a new interpretation of how nobility was viewed in sixteenth-century France and the changes that occurred in that view as France moved into the period of religious wars and popular rebellions and the appearance of the absolutist state. Challenging the belief that birth always had a primary place in determining noble status, Ellery Schalk finds that initially nobility was understood as a profession or functionthe military oneand as something one waswhich was to be virtuousrather than as something one inherited. He shows that it was not until the late 1500s and early 1600s that these concepts were transformed to a more modern perception of nobility as based on birth and gentility, a change that played a significant part in the development of absolutism. -- These findings have wide implications for the understanding of the social, political, and intellectual realities of sixteenth-and seventeenth-century France. Professor Schalk also demonstrates the origins of the sixteenth-century view in the Middle Ages and relates its popularity to ancient and Italian Renaissance traditions; and he carries the study forward toward the later ancien régime and the French Revolution, connecting his conclusions with recent work done on the nobility in these periods.
