A large engraved wall print in two sheets showing the trading and commercial centre of the city of Leiden, at the convergence of the Oude Rijn and Nieuwe Rijn canals. Unlike most other Dutch towns, Leiden had no central market square, so that the waterways formed the major access routes for merchandise. On the banks of the canals there is a lively market that converges on the bridge central in the print. Market traders and customers come and go. Women from the coastal fishing villages of Katwijk and Noortwijk display fresh fish for sale. Right in the print we see the monumental "Waag", the weigh-house built in 1658 following a plan by the Dutch architect and engraver Pieter Post. The splendid relief, designed by Rombout Verhulst, that crowns the entrance, is reproduced with a sharp eye for detail. In front of the building commercial goods are hoisted up from carts and a number of ships for transport to the weigh-house. Several other ships had moored and now continue to their destination. A boat flying the Dutch flag brings in a prominent party, while a herald standing precariously at the bow trumpets for right of way. We know of several other wall prints by Schenk depicting local situations with almost photographic detail. Thanks to this detail important socio-historical aspects have been passed on to later generations giving these prints an important cultural meaning today. Plate size: 21.6 × 31.7 cm. Although large-scale lake reclamation projects had already been carried out in North Holland during the seventeenth century, the plan to drain the ever-expanding Haarlemmermeer was postponed for many decades. Rivalry between Haarlem and Leiden the latter reluctant to lose the lucrative fishing rights to the vast inland sea prevented the execution of earlier proposals. In 1769, Dirk Klinkenberg and Barend Ariesz. Goudriaan presented a plan to drain the lake by means of an outfall at Katwijk. According to this scheme, 112 windmills would pump the lake dry, after which 50 additional mills would discharge the water from Rijnland's drainage basin into the sea. The costs for reclaiming the 19,000 bunders (c. 19,000 hectares) were estimated at approximately 9,000,000. The cartouche of the map states that it was issued as an appendix to the proposal concerning "the taming of the fury of the Haarlem and Leiden lakes." After a violent storm in 1836 drove the waters as far as Amsterdam and Leiden, it was finally decided to drain the Haarlemmermeer a task completed between 1848 and 1852. Price 375,-.

Across the IJ from Amsterdam, on the tip of the Volewijck peninsula, stood a tollhouse, an inn that also served as a ferry house where carriages with or without coachmen could be rented. From a slightly elevated viewpoint, as if the artist is looking from a high mast, this large print provides a view over the water with the tollhouse somewhat hidden among the ships and in the distance the dike village of Buiksloot. There was a ferry connection with Amsterdam already in the 14th century, the Buiksloterveer. From the mid-17th century, it served as a transfer point for the towpath between Amsterdam, Hoorn, Edam, Monnickendam, and Purmerend. The IJ is bustling with activity. It was a place where large ships came and went to all regions of the world. The horizon sits low, allowing the characteristic Dutch cloudy sky to dominate much of the composition. On the left, an official yacht from the Amsterdam chamber of the Dutch East India Company sails, while in the foreground to the right, a Fluyt (ship) is anchored. The captain approaches in a rowboat. There is ample space for a wide title ribbon in both Dutch and Latin. The ribbon is held on the right and left by putti, who seem to struggle against the strong wind.
