Christoph Martin Wieland (1733 - 1813) was a German poet and writer…. He is best-remembered for having written the first Bildungsroman (Geschichte des Agathon) , as well as the epic Oberon, which formed the basis for Carl Maria von Weber's opera of the same name. His thought was representative of the cosmopolitanism of the German Enlightenment, exemplified in his remark: "Only a true cosmopolitan can be a good citizen. " Illustrated with several charming line drawings (slightly naughty) by Paul Scheurich (1883-1945) , a German painter, graphic artist and small-sculptor. During a major period of his career, from the 1910s through the 1930s, Berlin was the centre for innovative design, art, architecture, music, literature, theatre and fashion. Scheurich's drawings, in pencil, charcoal and chalk were reproduced in printed form and were used for book illustrations and even bank notes.
