Dabei werden alle relevanten Dokumente, vor allem seine Briefe und die Briefe und Notizen von Zeitgenossen, die ihn besucht hatten, zu Rate gezogen und ausgewertet und die Phasen seines Leidens jeweils mit den gleichzeitig entstandenen Gedichten unmittelbar in Beziehung gesetzt. Die Diagnose seiner Krankheit zum Tode ergibt sich fast zwangsläufig aus der in den Dokumenten ausführlich beschriebenen Symptomatik, der medizinischen Behandlung und der schubartigen Verlaufsdynamik. Sie wird gestützt von den Aussagen in seinen Gedichten. Zusätzlich werden nochmals Details zu Ort und Zeit seiner wahrscheinlichen Ansteckung dargelegt und im Kontext der Symptomatik gedeutet.
