Schmidt held the famous and influential professorship of ophthalmology at Vienna. In 1801 he named iritis, the inflammation of the iris, and founded, with Himly, the first journal devoted to ophthalmology, the 'Ophthalmologische Bibliothek'. Among Schmidt's patients in Vienna was Beethoven, who voiced his gratitude in his 'Heiligenstatder testament'. Gorin, p.66. Albert, no. 2063.
