The significant advances in reproductive biology within this rapidly expanding field were highlighted at the Serono Symposia, USA, symposium entitled Growth Factors in Reproduc tion. The conference focused on growth factors as polyfunctional regulators of growth and development in the reproductive system. The program was organized into five areas: (1) growth factors as polyfunctional regulators of growth and development, (2) growth factors and gonadal function, (3) regulation of normal and neoplastic mammary growth, (4) regulatory peptides in reproductive tract development and function, and (5) embryo-maternal signaling. This volume constitutes the contributions ofthe invited symposium speakers and is organized into sections representing the five topic areas of the sessions. Drs. Eli Y. Adashi, Robert B. Dickson, David C. Lee, James Hammond, John A. McLachlan, and R. Michael Roberts, who served as chairmen ofthese sessions, not only provided invaluable advice and assistance in organizing the symposium, but contributed significantly to its content. The enthusiasm and esprit de corps of the poster presenters and discussion participants also helped make this symposium succeed as the first of its kind. Finally, special thanks are due Drs. James Posillico and Lisa Kern ofSerono Symposia, USA, for their guidance and support in the conception and planning of the symposium and in the publication of this volume.

Mit ihr legt er den ersten Katalog seines künstlerischen Werkes vor, dem sicher noch viele andere folgen werden. Wie es in Anbetracht seiner Jugend, er ist gerade einmal 29 Jahre alt, nicht anders sein kann, zeigt das Buch Arbeiten, die während seines Studiums, zur Diplom- und Meisterschüler-Prüfung und bei seinem Aufenthalt als Stipendiat in Stuhr-Heiligenrode entstanden sind. Schombergs ästhetische Spielfreude zeigt sich im Variationsreichtum seiner Werke. Er probiert sich in immer neuen Medien und Materialien, Themen und Formen aus. Mit großer Entdeckerfreude experimentiert er dabei mit den vielfältigen Möglichkeiten der Malerei. Mit Comics und Urban Art setzt er sich ebenso auseinander wie mit Werken von Hans Arp, Henri Matisse oder seinem Lehrer Olav Christopher Jenssen. Präzise untersucht er das Vokabular figurativer und abstrakter Malsprachen und befragt es auf seine Wirkmöglichkeiten hin. Seine Ergebnisse präsentiert er auf kleinen Formaten in Form eines Archivs, traut sich aber ohne Weiteres auch Großformate zu - mit durchaus imponierenden Ergebnissen. In seinen Spracharbeiten wie in den bildnerischen Werken tritt David Schomberg nicht nur als Homo ludens hervor, sondern auch als großer Ironiker in der Tradition eines Nestroy ("Einen Jux will er sich machen") oder eines Grabbe ("Scherz, Satire, Ironie und tiefere Bedeutung"). Seine Ironie, eine Form uneigentlichen Sprechens, die eines sagt und ein anderes meint, nimmt Kunst und Leben scheinbar leicht. Im Grunde aber nimmt Schomberg nichts ernster als sie, weil er Kunst und Leben in geradezu enthusiastischer Weise liebt und schätzt. Mit seinem ganzen Fühlen und Denken. Wovon auch sein diszipliniertes und leicht unterkühltes Auftreten nicht ablenken können. In seinem Lob der "schönsten Luftmatratze" umarmt er nicht nur sie, sondern zugleich die ganze Weit. Auf ihr liegend, sanft geschaukelt von den Wellen eines Sees, gestreichelt von der Sonne, unterhalten vom Spiel der Wolken, signalisiert sein Text ein fundamentales Einverständnis mit dem Leben. An ihm preist er nicht zuletzt die kleinen und einfachen Dinge: das Giück eines Picknicks, die Wohltat kalten Wassers, die Vollkommenheit eines Kuchens oder die Rätsel eines Türrahmens. (M.
