A collection of nine postcards reproducing the engravings of Martin Schongauer, an artist and engraver from Alsace, who lived and worked in the latter part of the 15th century, and whose work resembles that of Albrecht Durer who came on the scene later. Each post card measures 4" x 6"; seven are vertical in format and depict mostly religious figures (St. Sebastian, St. Christopher, St. Agnes, etc.) and two are horizontal showing animals (deer, and a lamb and mule). A two-page explanation in French and German is included in the portfolio. All captions on the reverse side of each post card are in French and in German; there is also a caption that reads: "Edition speciale pour le Musee d'Unterlinden" plus the name of the printer, Brown & Cie. The postcards and the explanatory pages all fit neatly into a glossy portfolio cover that reproduces the monogram of the artist in the center. In excellent condition.

Nutzten noch bis gegen Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts vorwiegend auswärtige Händler wie Pieter Schenk aus Amsterdam die Leipziger Messen zum ambulanten Angebot von »allerhande Raere Sachen«, wie es auf einem seiner Werbestiche heißt, so bildete sich dann in der Goethezeit ein ortsansässiger rofessioneller Kunsthandel heraus, der es zu hoher Blüte brachte. Zu dessen frü esten Vertretern gehörte Joseph Hennewarth aus Prag, der, als er 1775 starb, einen Warenvorrat hinterließ,en marr.---). auf über 20000 Taler schätzte, damals ein beachtliches Vermögen. Zum eigentlichen Begründer des Leipziger Kunsthandels ist jedoch erst nach ihm Karl Chr. Rost (1741-1798) geworden. Sein Geschäft befand sich in der Katharinenstraße, Leipzigs barocker Prachthäuserzeile. Rost hielt bereits alljährliche Auktionen ab und setzte sich mit seinem neunbändigen »Handbuch für Kunstliebhaber und Sammler über die vornehmsten Kupferstecher und ihre Werke« ein Denkmal, das zum Vorläufer von Adam von Bartschs »Peintre-Graveur« geworden ist. Aus der folgenden Generation war Johann August Gottlieb Weigel (1773-846) die bemerkenswerteste Persönlichkeit, »ein schlichter:aber, höChst achtbarer Herr und zugleich eine lebende Leipziger Kunstchronik«, wie ihn der Maler Friedrich Pecht in Erinnerung behielt. Als Antiquar, Verlagsbuchhändler, »Universitätsproklamator« (d. h. Versteigerer) und eifriger Sammler vorrangig von Handzeichnungen stand er im Rufe eines versierten Kenners, von dem auch Goethe sich beraten und beliefern ließ. Doch sollte ihm gerade in der Gunst des Weimarer Dichterfürsten alsbald ein Konkurrent erwachsen, dessen Umsicht und Tatkraft die Grundlagen für ein Unternehmen schufen, das binnen weniger Jahrzehnte alle Leipziger Rivalen überflügeln konnte und das bis heute fortbesteht als eines der bestrenommierten Kunstantiquariate der Welt: Carl Gustav Boerner. Vor zweihundert Jahren wurde er anii:t.-1Ugust 1790 in Knau bei Schleiz in Thüringen als Pfarrersohn geboren. Seine künstlerischen Neigungen führten ihn in jungen Jahren an die Leipziger Akademie. Anschließend vervollkommnete er in Dresden seine Ausbildung zum Maler. Danach wurde er in seiner engeren Heimat Porträtist an den reußischen Fürstenhöfen von Greiz und Schleiz. Die Einkünfte aus diesen Diensten erlaubten ihm weitere Studien in Wien und München. Schon als gereifter Mann brach er schließlich 823 nach Italien auf, wo er im Kreise der Romaritiker verkehrte und seine lebenslange Freundschaft mit dem gut ein Dutzend Jahre jüngeren Dresdner Ludwig Richter schloß. In Richters »Lebenserinnerungen« erscheint Boerner als »liebenswürdiger und feingebildeter Mann, welcher aber während seines römischen Aufenthaltes fast gänzlich am Arbeiten sich verhindert sah, weil er fortwährend von nervösem Gesichtsschmerz und Schlaflosigkeit geplagt wurde. Da Boerner auch späterhin durch seine Kränklichkeit in der künstlerischen Ausbildung zurückblieb, fing er in Leipzig mit sehr geringen Mitteln ein Kunstgeschäft an, welches er zu hohem Flor brachte.
