Appelé à servir auprès de Rommel dans les campagnes de Pologne et de France, il laisse femme et enfants à Gera, en Thuringe, avant de partir pour la Libye où Rommel a été nommé commandant de l'Afrikakorps. Depuis son campement, il écrit de nombreuses lettres à son épouse - un ensemble de quatre cents pages, rarement censuré -, témoignage unique et riche sur cet épisode de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. L'aide de camp du général y exprime notamment sa crainte que la guerre ne s'enlise à l'Est et ne compromette la campagne d'Afrique du Nord ; il nous livre également les réflexions d'un officier face à la politique de Berlin. Son fils, Hans-Albrecht, avait sept ans à la mort de son père. Sa mère lui a remis cette correspondance exceptionnelle et inédite, qu'il nous dévoile, accompagnée de ses souvenirs et commentaires. Plongés au cur de cette époque trouble et violente, nous devenons ainsi les spectateurs privilégiés des événements de cette campagne.
