Published by Jonathan Cape in 1959, here is the first hardback printing of August Strindberg's THE PEOPLE OF HEMSO translated from the Swedish by Elspeth Harley Schubert (Anglo-Swedish Literary Foundation). Blue cloth binding, gilt lettering, 220 pages, the book is in very good condition with some very minor bumping to the board edges and corners plus some very minor dusty spotting to the top page edges and the name of a previous owner (the distinguished Oxford scholar and Hertford College fellow Anthony Cockshut) written softly in blue ink to the front free end paper. Anthony has also written some light pencil dates to the very last page presumably reminding him when he first read and then reread this striking book. The cult sky-blue dust jacket with black lettering is also very good with some minor spotting and some moderate staining to the edges. A cracking offering.
