Der Stuttgarter Theologe Gustav Schwab (1792 - 1850) wurde durch das Buch der schönsten Geschichten und Sagen und durch die »Sagen des klassischen Altertums« weit über den Umkreis seiner schwäbischen Heimat hinaus bekannt. Er war ein Gönner und Förderer junger Dichter, stand mit Chamisso, Uhland, Kern…er, aber auch mit Goethe und Tieck in Verbindung. Das Überragende seiner Sammlung besteht darin, daß er es vermochte, die gesamte antike Mythologie und Sagenwelt zu einem einheitlichen Ganzen zu verweben. Juni 1792 in Stuttgart als Sohn eines Professors und Geheimen Hofrates geboren. Ab 1809 studierte er, wie sein Kollege Hölderlin einige Jahre zuvor, Philologie und Philosophie und Theologie am Evangelischen Stift in Tübingen. Nach dem Studium erhielt er eine Professur für Latein in Stuttgart. Ab 1825 arbeitete er als Redakteur bei F.A. Brockhaus Leipzig; drei Jahre später nahm er eine Stelle im Verlag von Johan Friedrich Cotta an. Seit 1837 übernahm er verschiedene Pfarrstellen und wurde 1845 zum Leiter der höheren Schulen in Württemberg berufen. 1847 wurde ihm die Ehrendoktorwürde der Theologie von der Universität Tübingen verliehen. Als Schriftsteller hat er sich insbesondere durch seine Übersetzungen und Nacherzählungen klassischer Sagen einen Namen gemacht. Er starb am 4.
