Es handelt sich nicht um eine Ansichtskarte, sondern um eine Ansicht (Photo) aus der Zeit kurz nach der Einweihung des Turms. Der Bau wurde zum 100. Geburtstag des ersten deutschen Kaisers Wilhelm in Auftrag gegeben und hat Krieg und Denkmalsturz überstanden. Nach dem Studium an der Berliner Bauakademie wurde Schwechten Mitarbeiter von August Stüler und Martin Gropius. Seit 1871 leitete er das Entwurfsbüro der Berlin-Anhalter-Eisenbahn, für die er u.a. den Bau des Anhalter Personenbahnhofs realisierte. 1885 in die Akademie der Künste aufgenommen und als Dozent an die TH Berlin berufen, wurde er 1888 Senatsmitglied und Baurat. Seit 1902 leitete er ein Meisteratelier an der Akademie der Künste. Seine Berliner Bauten (u.a. Anhalter Bahnhof, 1875-80; Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche, 1891-95; beide im Zweiten Weltkrieg zerstört) zeugen von einer Vorliebe für neoromantische Stilformen. Innerhalb des Historismus bediente er sich auch der Formen der Neorenaissance und Backsteingotik.…
