Karl Ernst Theodor Schweigger (1830-1905), "zu Berlin, geb. zu Halle a. S. 29. Okt. 1830 als Sohn des Prof. der Physik Johann Salomon Christoph Sweigger, (1779 bis 1857), studierte in Erlangen und Halle, prom. 1852 an letzterer Univ. und wirkte 1852 bis 55 als Assistent an Krukenberg's med. Klinik, wo er als einer der ersten Kurse in der Auskultation und Perkussion erteilte. 1856 ging er nach Würzburg, um sich hier unter H. Mueller besonders mit dem Studium der mikrosk. Anat. des Auges zu beschäftigen. 1857 bis 64 war er als Assistent bei A. v. Graefe in Berlin thätig, beschäftigte sich hier vorzugsweise mit dem wissenschaftl. Teile der Augenheilkunde und habilitierte sich 1860 bei der med. Fakultät als Privatdozent. Eine grosse Reihe von Arbeiten, zum Teil in Gemeinschaft mit A. v. Graefe, stammt aus dieser Zeit. Dieselben sind fast alle in dessen Archiv veröffentlicht. Hierher gehören u.a.: "Untersuchungen über pigmentirte Netzhaut" (V) - "Die Ganglienzellen und blassen Nerven der Chorioidea" (VI) - "Zur patholog. Anatomie der Chorioidea" (IX), in Gemeinschaft mit A. v. Graefe: "Beiträge zur anat. Klinik der Augenkrankheiten" (VI). Nach seinem Abgange aus der v. Graefe'schen Klinik machte er grössere wissenschaftl. Reisen nach Utrecht, London, Nordamerika u.s.w. und wurde 1868 zum a. o. Prof. der Augenheilkunde in Göttingen und Direktor der dort neu gegründeten Augenklinik ernannt. Hier blieb er bis 1871, wo er als Nachfolger seines Lehrers A. v. Graefe nach Berlin berufen wurde. Kurz nach seinem Eintreffen daselbst gab er ein "Handbuch der Augenheilkunde" (Berlin 1871) heraus, für dessen Trefflichkeit schon allein der Umstand spricht, dass es bis 1885 5 Aufl. erlebt hat. 1873 wurde er zum ord. Prof. ernannt und 1885 erhielt er den Titel eines Geh. Med.-Rats. 1882 trat er in die Redaktion des von Knapp gegründeten A. f. A. ein. Ausser den bereits genannten Schriften Sweigger's mögen folgende Arbeiten hier Erwähnung finden: "Ueber Amblyopien bei Nierenleiden" (Graefe's A., VI) - "Ueber Entstehung des Kapselstaares" (Ib.
