Neuware - Der in Bleckede geborene Kurt Löwenstein (1885-1939) gehört zu den wohl einflussreichsten sozialdemokratischen Schul- und Erziehungspolitikern der Zwischenkriegszeit. Seine eigene, jüdisch-weltliche Schulbildung erhält er in Hannover, in der Davidschen Freischule; am Rabbiner-Seminar kommt… ihm jedoch seine Religiosität abhanden. Er gründet die größte laienpädagogische Organisation der Weimarer Republik, die 'Kinderfreunde'. In deren Kindergruppen ('Rote Falken') und selbstverwalteten 'Kinderrepubliken' lernen Proletarierkinder Selbstachtung, Kritikfähigkeit und demokratische Formen der Konfliktlösung. In Berlin-Neukölln kann Löwenstein seine Vorstellungen sozialistischer Reformschulpädagogik umsetzen, bis er 1933 fliehen muss. In Frankreich widmet er sich dem Aufbau einer sozialdemokratischen Internationale von Kinder- und Erziehungsorganisationen, der heutigen IFM-SEI. Im Mai 1939 stirbt Löwenstein im Pariser Exil.
