'Stein was certainly a most remarkable person. In 1956 he was 35 years old, a professor at Stanford University, which he had joined in 1953, and had already done some fundamental research in mathematical statistics, including the famous Hunt-Stein theorem relating group theory and statistical invariance. . . . he contributed a number of other important [results] to mathematical statistics. One of these was a 1972 paper in which he showed convergence in distribution to the normal and produced a Berry-Esseen type theorem for sums of dependent random variables. The technique he developed was quite novel and did not make use of Fourier methods, but relied instead on an elementary differential equation. His result, for example, gives a way of obtaining a Berry-Esseen result for U-statistics. Stein's result was applied in 1975 by Chen to the Poisson case and has since become known as the Chen-Stein method' ('Statistics in the Fifties', SASA's fiftieth anniversary conference presidential address). Other contributors include Debreu & Schmeidler, W. Hildenbrand, Kakutani, Gnedenko, et al. Also includes Mark Kac, 'William Feller, in Memoriam' (xxi-xxiii), L. K. Schmetterer, 'Alfréd Rényi, in Memoriam' (xxv-l).

Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: very good. Boston : Little, Brown and Company, 1973. Hardcover. Dustjacket. xi, 717 pp. - This book is a significant contribution to the explanation and prediction of political change. It combines the insights and techniques of system-functionalism with the theories of social mobilization, rational choice, and leadership in explaining the causes, outcomes, and consequences of seven political crises in Europe, Latin America, and Asia during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The studies use a common format and methodology and are further integrated by introductory chapters and a conclusion that combine earlier partial approaches to the explanation of political change and present a new theory of political development. Adding sophistication and methodological rigor to the historical case study approach, the book returns politics and political choice to the center of efforts to explain political development. The essays presented in this volume contribute substantially to the study of the economy and attitudes towards poverty and wealth during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The dichotomous topics, 'poverty and prosperity', 'rich and poor', continue to interest scholars, politicians, and philosophers while also appealing to a wide general audience, and are particularly of interest today. In this volume, the authors raise and try to answer questions about the ways in which individuals, families, ethnic and religious groups and nations 500, 1000, or even 1500, years ago approached the idea of economic status and personal worth. The interdisciplinary nature of this volume provides an analysis of poverty and prosperity from a multitude of perspectives and within a host of secular and religious literature: historical treatises, scholastic works, art, travellers' and political accounts. Through its breadth, depth, and interdisciplinary focus, the present volume makes a full contribution to the topic for anyone interested in how people in the past have experienced these states. This is a volume of essays on fear and its representations in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and the interdisciplinary nature of this volume motivates an analysis of fear from a multitude of perspectives and within a host of secular and religious literature, historical treatises, scholastic works, art, and political accounts. Fear is a topic that appeals to a wide audience and is particularly of interest today. In the modern world, we fear war and terrorism, economic recession, and environmental degradation: these fears make up a great portion of the fabric of our daily lives. This is a volume of essays on fear and its representations in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. In it, the authors raise and try to answer questions about the ways in which individuals, families, and nations five-hundred, one-thousand, or even fifteen-hundred years ago approached the idea of fear. The interdisciplinary nature of this volume and its editors (an historian of late antiquity and professor of literature of the Middle Ages) motivates an analysis of fear from a multitude of perspectives and within a host of secular and religious literature, historical treatises, scholastic works, art, and political accounts. The volume covers several main topics: Defining the Nature of Fear; Fear and Religion; Fear in Politics and Cultural Identity; Fear as a Literary and Dramatic Device; The Fears of Courtly Lovers, Knights, and Poets; Fear and the Mystic. Through its breadth, depth, and interdisciplinary focus, the present volume makes a full contribution to the study of fear in medieval and Renaissance culture for historians, art historians, students of language and philosophy and anyone interested in how people in the past have experienced fear.
