Trade Paperback. Condizione: Near Fine. 12 Pages and 20 Postcards. No defects noted and the post cards are flawless. This beautiful collection of full-color postcards contains some of the finest works from the Art Nouveau period, which achieved its zenith in the last decade of the nineteenth century. Together the cards form a delightfully vivid commentary on the spirit and verve of their time, while individually each picture is striking and charming in its own right. These bright and colorful designs have been drawn primarily from the explosion of posters that originated in the print shops and social calendars of that most elegant and supremely exciting of cities, Paris. The advertisements for the Folies-Bergere, the Moulin Rouge, the can-can, all conjure up the glamour and sensuality of a city brimming with new ideas and an adventurous sense of fun. The posters, which began to emerge from Jules Cherct's print shop as early as 1866, were a perfect complement to this sensuous extravagance, and they heralded what remains as the most decisive revolution in the history of advertising. Until then, advertising for cigarettes, books or biscuits was somber and worthy, consisting almost exclusively of lettering, perhaps also with a small likeness of the object in question. Cheret, now recognized as the father of the poster, saw that people were attracted to color, laughter and simple direct images, so he drew what he knew was in the air around him and managed to apply that potent mixture of freshness and sophistication to almost every subject. Artists from Britain, Czechoslovakia, Switzerland and Germany joined the many ardent Frenchmen who began to decorate the walls, calendars and book covers of the nation with the new sense of whimsy and high spirits. They reflected the spirit of the age in a way that achieved a unique combination of popular and artistic success. For the first time, posters for the Folies-Bergere shook with frivolity and bold sensual appeal; the designs for alcoholic drinks, coffee, outdoor concerts, conferences and the theater whisked the observer into a bright, lively world of innocence on a grand scale. This book of postcards is a celebration of the enduring appeal of the Art Nouveau poster style, and designed for you to keep or to share with others.
