Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New. NEW & UNREAD. This brand new Book is still sealed in its publishing wrapping. Jan Van Eyck (c. 1390-1441) towered above his contemporaries, and many assert that he is still doing so. With his unprecedented technique, scientific knowledge and unparalleled powers of original observation and astounding skill, Van Eyck lifted oil painting to previously unseen heights and helped determine the course of Western art. In 2020 the Museum of Fine Arts Ghent hosted the largest ever exhibition of Van Eyck's work. Its an exhibition that was promptly ended by the pandemic; it will presumably be extended - one seriously hopes so - but at the moment all we can do is study these pictorial gems in our homes. An Optical Revolution includes artworks by Van Eyck, several pieces from his studio and international masterpieces from the late Middle Ages, which makes the world of Van Eyck more tangible than ever. This tie-in exhibition catalogue unravels the myths that surround Van Eyck and his technique; by showing his complete workd we can understand why his influence placed art history in a new perspective. Central to the exhibition are the eight restored exterior panels of the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, a highly exceptional loan from St Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent. After the exhibition the panels will return to their original place in the cathedral and never again be shown elsewhere. Including essays by leading experts from around the world, this book will be an indispensable resource for Van Eyck fans and scholars alike. NEW & UNREAD and still SEALED. It is in MINT condition. This huge and heavy volume may need extra postage depending on destination.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: New. Jones's Icones contains finely delineated paintings of more than 760 species of Lepidoptera, many of which are described for the first time, marking a critical moment in the study of natural history. With Iconotypes Jones's seminal work is published for the first time, accompanied by expert commentary and contextual essays, and featuring annotated maps showing the location of each species. Jones painted the species between the early 1780s and 1800, drawing from his own collection and the collections of Joseph Banks, Dru Drury, Sir James Edward Smith, John Francillon, the British Museum and the Linnean Society. For every specimen painting he provided a species name, the collection from which it was taken and the geographical location in which it was found. In 1787, during a visit to London, the Danish scientist Johann Christian Fabricius studied Jones s paintings and based 231 species of butterfly and moths on them. In this enhanced facsimile, Jones s references to historic references are clarified and modern taxonomic names are provided, together with notes on which paintings serve as iconotypes. Contextual commentary by specialist entomologist Richard I. Vane-Wright gives an account of Jones s life and his motivation for collecting butterflies and creating the Icones, and evaluates the significance of his work. Interspersed at intervals between the pages of Jones s paintings are modern maps showing the location of each species painted, and expert essays on the development of lepidoptery and taxonomy after Linneaus, and the roles of collectors and natural history artists from the late 1700s to mid-1800s. With 1600 illustrations in colourAn extraordinary natural history book. Butterflies and moths from 6 continents. A gorgeous historical work resurrected for today's modern scholar. A heavy book, may need extra postage according to country. SEALED at the publishers. NEW AND UNREAD.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: New. Brand new Book, still sealed. A comprehensive presentation of the provocative, modernist graphic works of Britain's creator of Art Nouveau This is the first book to bring together the recorded works of the English artist Aubrey Beardsley. Despite his early death from tuberculosis in 1898, at the age of 25, these amount to nearly 1100 completed works of art (plus many related sketches) as well as more than 100 sketches in his letters and the books he owned, and this book includes over 50 that have never previously been published. In his brief career Beardsley made a defining contribution to Art Nouveau in Britain and abroad. He also influenced the early history of modern art, attracting the attention of the young Picasso, for example. His distinctive and innovatory graphic style, combined with highly provocative, often sexual subject matter, outraged critics and led to a period of intense notoriety. Beardsley's drawings span the grotesque, the delicately beautiful, the subtly erotic, and the frankly bawdy, and challenged the moral norms of Victorian society. They enthralled artists and art lovers the world over and continue to enthral today. Linda Gertner Zatlin's text presents Beardsley's drawings with a full record of their making, provenance, exhibition history and references in the art historical literature. This material record is accompanied by often extensive discussions of their themes, motifs and symbolism, as well as their critical reception. Unprecedented in its scope and thoroughness, this study presents Beardsley's work and explores its meanings more comprehensively than any previous work on him; it is likely to remain definitive. This superbly illustrated two volume catalogue, beautifully presented as a boxed set, is both an essential reference for specialists and an accessible and enchanting delight for Beardsley enthusiasts.

This is an account by John Dreyfus of Gill's collaboration with Robert Gibbings in producing the celebrated Golden Cockerel Press edition of 'The Four Gospels' in 1931. "Through a combination of good luck and exceptional help from librarians and collectors on both sides of the Atlantic, I have been able to locate a great many documents which throw new light on what went on during the planning and production of The Four Gospels by Gibbings and Gill." This edition of only 250 copies was printed by Meridan-Stinchour Press, on Superfine Paper from the Mohawk Paper Mills. The duotone photographs are by Michael Arsenault. The text was composed in Linotronic Galliard designed by Matthew Carter. Main title and chapter headings set in Golden Cockerel at the Rampant Lions Press, Cambridge.
