From the 1820s to the 1850s, Sedgwick made a living writing short stories for variety of periodicals. She became one of the most notable female novelists of her time. She wrote work in American settings, and combined patriotism with protests against historic Puritan oppresiveness. Her topics contributed to the creation of a national literature, enhanced by her detailed descriptions of nature. Sedgwick created spirited heroines who did not conform to the stereotypical conduct of women at the time." Her style and approach lost favor eventually and it was not until the 1960's that feminist scholars began to re-evaluate women's contributions to literature. These two volumes were published by Harper & Brothers of New York, dated 1841 and the First Edition, with the same date on title and copyright pages. These two small hard cover volumes are composed of the letters the Author wrote to her acquaintances, starting in June of 1939 where she disembarks from the ocean voyage in Portsmouth, and continues to her visit to Italy and Florence (the dates of her various visits are not always clear). There are no illustrations. Condition: These two small hard cover volumes are in very good condition. The hard covers are clean and bright but a little dust-dulled nnd the gilt titles and decorations, slightly tarnished. The hard covers of both volumes have been bumped, in some cases, exposing the boards beneath but nevertheless, noting too extreme. There has been some slight splitting of the gutter are the base of the spine of Volume II. Inside, a former owner has left their name on the front endpaper of both volumes and these along with some lightly penciled bookseller's notations on the rear endpapers of both volumes, are the only marks I found. The interior pages are lightly foxed, some worse than others but none bad enough to obscure the text. All the hinges are intact and both volumes are tight and sound. Vol. V is illustrated with 14 full-page steel plate engravings, including line and mezzotints, with three hand-colored fashion plates; Vol. VI features 18 engravings, (none colored.) A number have patriotic or political themes, with the male editors providing commentary (also for the fashion plates, oddly.) Contributions from a number of recognized nineteenth-century women writers are represented in these pages, as outlined. ** CONDITION: Very Good overall, but INSIDE IS CLOSER TO FINE. Exterior with some rubbing and shelf wear. Loss of leather corner on front bottom. Crack to top of joint about two inches in length. Inside, hinges are in order. Folded corner to a couple of prelims, but contents are very clean, firm and bright. Plates are gorgeous, with only one blemished marginally and one other only foxed. The mezzotints sing with deep rich tones. **AUTHOR HIGHLIGHTS include several poems by FRANCES SARGENT OSGOOD (1811-1850); she and EDGAR ALLAN POE famously exchanged romantic poetry, and she is buried at Boston's Mount Auburn Cemetery. Another Poe acquaintance was the Author Miss CATHERINE M. SEDGWICK, who was brought up in western Massachusetts in a family of lawyers and judges (her father became Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court.) She was a successful novelist in her own right, publishing 1824's "A New England Tale. Redwood, " a best seller. Her work was favorably compared to that of her contemporary James Fenimore Cooper. Poe described her appearance in detail in a column in Godey's Lady's Book of 1846 (Vol. 33, pp. 131-132) in a column titled "The Literati of New York City"."Her forehead is an unusually fine one, [the] nose of a slightly Roman curve; eyes dark and piercing; mouth well-formed and remarkably pleasant in its expression. The portrait in Graham's Magazine is by no means a likeness." Ms. Osgood was, then, being extensively written about in the main literary outlets of the day. She provides six selections here.**LYDIA MARIA CHILD (1802-1880), another influential Massachusetts author and editor, was also a first wave feminist known for her promotion of many causes considered "radical" in her day. Abolitionism, the rights of indigenous people, and women's suffrage were among her causes, and she also wrote a novel about interracial marriage in 1824. She and her husband also worked with Newburyport-born abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison's anti-slavery movement in Boston. She promoted Republican motherhood. Early life: Catharine Maria Sedgwick was born December 28, 1789 in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Her mother was Pamela Dwight (1752-1807) of the New England Dwight family, daughter of General Joseph Dwight (1703-1765) and granddaughter of Ephraim Williams, founder of Williams College. Her father was Theodore Sedgwick (1746-1813), a prosperous lawyer and successful politician. He was later elected Speaker of the United States House of Representatives and in 1802 was appointed a justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. As a child, Sedgwick was cared for by Elizabeth Freeman, a former slave whose freedom Theodore Sedgwick helped gain by arguing her case in county court in 1781. After winning her freedom Freeman declined her previous owner's job offer, and instead accepted a job working for the Sedgwick family. As a young woman, Sedgwick attended a finishing school in Boston to complete her education. One of her schoolmates, Susan Anne Ridley Sedgwick (1788-1867), would become her sister-in-law and a published author. Sedgwick was engaged at one point to Harmanus Bleecker, a friend of her father and law partner of her brother Theodore (1780-1839).
