Charged with complicity, Antonov was put on trial together with two other Bulgarians and three Turks, including Grey Wolves member Mehmet Ali Agca, who would name Sergei his co-conspirator. Lacking enough evidence against the Bulgarian Secret Service's claimed hiring of the men to carry on the assassination, Antonov was acquited in 1986.
