In his 2008 book Dope Menace, Stephen Gertz calls Cocaine "the greatest novel of drug-soaked decadent society yet written.Penned by Italian journalist Dino Segrè under the pseudonym Pitigrilli just a year before Crowley's Diary of a Drug Fiend, it provides."a vivid picture of the cocaine-crazed demimonde of the Parisian 1920s," an understatement in the extreme. This is not a fun-with-coke saga. As seductive as the drug itself, the story grips the reader and pulls us into the downward spiral of the protagonist, whose obsession with the drug draws him into the inevitable pit that awaits virtually all who stay at the "white orgy" too long" (p.58). Pitigrilli's protagonist, Tito Arnaudi, is a twenty-something Italian making his way in Paris during the decadent and cynical post-war period. The author's casual treatment of inflammatory topics such as sex, drugs, abortion, and the amoral lifestyle quickly landed his novel on the Catholic Church's list of banned books. Rare in dustjacket; OCLC notes just 2 holdings (Harvard, York Univ.).
