Spreading out from the 1867 Exposition Universelle in Paris and the artist quarters of Paris, the new craze soon appeared in the salons of the bourgeoisie through- out Europe. From a Nordic perspective, however, Japan was both remote and exotic-only very few people had actually been there. Cultured circles with an interest in the fine arts were fascinated with the exoticism of the far ends of the world. Japonisme made a deep impression on Nordic art. Artists who studied in Paris, including such figures as Akseli Gallen- Kallela, Nikolai Astrup, I. A. Ring and Bruno Liljefors, adopted new ideas from Japanese culture regarding composition, colour fields and the treatment of space. Compositions became asymmetrical and full of contrasting patterns, and the horizon moved to the top of the paintings so that the landscapes often seemed two-dimensional. Natural motifs were rendered in imitation of the reductive and meditative style of Japanese art, while portraits and interior scenes began to abound with Japanese fans, textiles and other objects. Japanese items were also acquired by collectors and museums, mostly with the help of intermediaries, but also on personal trips to Japan, which brought a considerable volume of objects to Europe, including furniture, lacquer work and ceramics. The effects of Japonisme on the fine arts have been the object of much research. As Professor Gabriel P. Weisberg, a leading expert on Japonisme, once remarked: While many different revivalist styles and outside influences helped shape the European visual arts in the nineteenth century-from Neo-Gothic to a historical interest in the Renaissance, to an Orientalist influence-none had the all-encompassing impact that Japonisme had on Western art and culture and none lasted as long Research on Nordic Japonisme, by contrast, has until now consisted of monographs and studies on individual artists. When the Ateneum Art Museum/ Finnish National Gallery took the initiative to launch a research and exhibition project on Nordic Japonisme, we quickly found that we were treading new ground. For the first time, we were examining Nordic Japonisme as a totality. This exhibition is the result of the fruitful cooperation between the four Nordic national galleries in Helsinki, Oslo, Copenhagen and Stockholm, all of which played different roles in the planning of the research and exhibition project. The show was co-curated by Helsinki and Oslo. The exhibition will then travel to Copenhagen." excerpt from preface by Susanna Pettersson, Director, Ateneum Art Museum/ Finnish National Gallery, Helsinki; Nils Ohlsen, Director, Department of Old Masters and Modern Art, National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, Oslo; and Mikkel Bogh, Director, Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen.

Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Crossing Borders is a richly illustrated art historical exhibition catalogue and scholarly anthology that explores the lived and artistic journeys of women painters and visual artists in the 1800s who studied, worked, and forged networks across Europe - particularly in German art hubs such as Dresden, Düsseldorf, Karlsruhe, Munich, Weimar and Berlin. Rather than merely documenting individual biographies, this volume emphasises the social, educational and cultural networks that these women built, showing how travel, artistic exchange and transnational mobility shaped their careers at a time when opportunities for women in the arts were limited. Featuring essays by international researchers and visually engaging archival images and artworks, the book highlights how these pioneering artists "crossed borders" both geographically and institutionally, contributing to broader artistic conversations of the 19th century. Chief editors: Anne-Maria Pennonen, Hanne Selkokari ; photography and image processing: Ainur Nasretdin [and four others] ; translations: Gérard Goodrow, Ian Mac Eochagáin, Wif Stenger Text in English. 253 pp. Illustrated and contains maps. Overall in good condition. Some scratches on the covers.
