James Niven was a Scottish physician, perhaps best known for his work during the Spanish Flu outbreak in 1918 as Manchester's Medical Officer of Health, he held that position for 28 years (1894-1922), until he retired. He had previously been Oldham's Medical Officer of Health. He lectured in Public Health in Manchester. He committed suicide on The Isle of Man in 1925 by taking an overdose and swimming out to sea. Light off-settting to the end papers and in Very Good condition. Member of the P.B.F.A. LITERARY CRITICISM.

Robinson Close, in the Science Area at Oxford, is named after him, as is the Robert Robinson Laboratory at the University of Liverpool, the Sir Robert Robinson Laboratory of Organic Chemistry at the University of Manchester and the Robinson and Cornforth Laboratories at the University of Sydney, he was President of the Chemical Society from 1939 to 1941.
