Questo libro tratta del CERIMONIALE COME LINGUAGGIO POLITICO, finalizzato a sacralizzare le istituzioni politiche o, nel caso della Corte pontificia, a strutturare la sua sacralità con valenze legate al significato politico che lo Stato vaticano esercitava da tempo emerga durante il Medio Evo. I rituali pubblici rappresentavano, nella prima età moderna, le specifiche configurazioni dell'intersezione della sfera del sacro con la sfera del politico, ma ogni configurazione non visualizzava un «ordine» acquisito una volta per tutte e passivamente tramandato e ripetuto. Essa era piuttosto l'esito di un processo, un equilibrio tra tensioni che poteva in ogni momento essere messo in discussione, riformulando il rituale in nuove forme. La dialettica sacro-politico appare, come nota P. Burke in Sacred rulers, royals priests: ritual of the early modern popes, straordinariamente complessa nel caso del cerimoniale dei papi a causa ovviamente dell'intreccio nella sovranità papale di due declinazioni del potere, quella spirituale e quella temporale, ma anche dell'ambiguità della figura papale all'interno di ciascuna delle due declinazioni (da un lato vescovo di Roma e pontefice universale, dall'altro monarca assoluto, ma elettivo dello Stato papale). Il cerimoniale rappresentava costantemente la complessità del potere papale, ma sottolineava anche maggiormente l'una ? l'altra delle molteplici dimensioni della sovranità pontificia. Soprattutto nel 600 si sentì l'esigenza di aggiornare questi protocolli, e tra la pletora dei trattati emersero per importanza quelli del Lunadoro, del Sestini e dell'Amati, che si pose in atteggiamento dialettico con quello del Sestini, che conobbe, vista la sua autorevolezza, numerose ristampe tra 600 e 700.
