The very scarce two volume first edition of this work.The author, Elizabeth Missing Sewell, was an English author of religious and educational works. She devised a set of influential principles of education, and published a number of novels with moral messages.Edited by the author's brother, William Sewell.Reflecting the principles of the Oxford Movement with which she was acquainted, Sewell's novel follows a young woman, Gertrude, who has a substantial inheritance. Gertrude desires to build a church, but is worried she is unworthy of the undertaking. In half calf bindings, with marbled paper covered boards. Minor rubbing to spine tails, otherwise externally excellent. Front hinges a touch strained, but firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting to first and last few leaves, with pages otherwise clean and bright. Very Good. book.
