So untersucht er etwa in derTao Series und der Landscape and Humanist Painting Series Prinzipien der Ästhetik, wie sie im Konfuzianismus aufgestellt wurden, mit den Mitteln der abstrakten Malerei. Wie auch die chinesischen Rollbilder nie Landschaftsporträts im eigentlichen Sinne waren, sondern idealtypische ästhetische Ideale verkörperten, letztlich also Metaphern darstellten, so sieht auch Li Lei seine Bilder als »Landschaften des Herzens«.
