Copiously illustrated with black and white drawings in text, including a double page spread showing the location in London of Police and Fire Stations and their communications links. In red cloth-covered boards, blind stamped and tooled front and rear, gilt titles on spine. 8vo. Boards are little rubbed at edges, some fading especially over spine, gently rounded at corners and spine ends. Slightly foxed on text block edges. Two previous owner's names on front free endpaper. A little cracking of paper over front hinge else internally neat, clean, bright and tight. A scarce and early text on the history of fire-fighting. This second edition includes much additional material, Shaw having brought it completely up to date, focussing on changes and developments in the London Metropolitan Fire Brigade. The advertisements at the rear, many of which are illustrated feature Fire Engines made by the likes of Shand, Mason & Co and Merryweather and Sons, as well as fire escapes, pumping machinery, hose-pipes and so on.…

The sub-title to "Fire Protection" reasonably sums up the content of this early and important book on the organisation, equipment, personnal and and operations of a "modern" fire brigade. The first edition of the manual was printed as far back as 1876 with this second and revised edition published in 1890. In his introduction to this issue of the book Captain Shaw briefly explains the changes and advances made at the London Metropolitain Fire Brigade in the interim. A classic and iconic fire-fighting text, which is now rare, with this copy in particularly excellent condition. New and revised edition of 1890, 348 pages , the book's text is illustrated throughout with b/w drawings, diagrams, tables etc, these ranging from fire fighting equipment and machines, rescue techniques, ladders and hoses, pumps to knots frequently used by firemen. Text information is highly detailed and a double page map of the London area shows the location of fire and police stations and telephone links. An index follows the introduction and at the back, folloiwing the text block, an 20 page advertising supplement contains interesting illustrations of fire-fighting equipment. Red hard covers show traces light wear at spine extremities/corners, spine lightly sunned with gilt titles slightly dulled, base colour to both boards bright and clean with few small marks, lightly inscribed pencil name top corner FFEP (could be erased), few light foxing marks to title and contents pages, small section, not intruding to text, missing top edge page 169/170, text block is otherwise excellent. First edition. Large quarto. 64 pages + 3 huge folding charts. The book is firmly bound in the original dark green pebbled cloth covered boards, lettered and decorated in gilt and blind with yellow endpapers front and rear, the cloth is slightly marked, the extremities are bumped and there is a superficial split starting at the top of the rear hinge, probably from a knock received, the cloth torn. The text block is slightly toned and marked, and there are closed tears to the charts, though they remain in fairly good order and the tears appear to be from careless mis-opening rather than weakness to the folds. From the archives of the RSA Insurance Group with their barcode strip to the front pastedown. An important record gathered together by the redoubtable Shaw, providing information on fires, fire engines, equipment in possession of the Fire Engine Establishment, and details of the men killed while fighting fires in the metropolis. This, quite a well-preserved example in the original cloth.…

Some foxing at the ends but a rather good copy. First edition. Essential in fire fighting history. As far as Shaw was concerned, this was the first attempt in any language "approaching to a complete or comprehensive scheme" to embody the essential principles and practice of fire fighting. In other countries printed manuals "of some kind or another have been in use for many years . but they are meagre in the extreme and . altogether useless for the instruction of fire brigades charged with the protection of great commercial cities". Shaw was of course responsible for the modern London fire department, in turn the model for fire departments around the world. …
