Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Since the 1980s, projects such as the State Archives of Assyria have made great strides in the philological study of Neo-Assyrian inscriptional sources, producing text editions and hand-copies of administrative and legal texts, letters, religious and literary works, and royal and private commemorative inscriptions with a high standard of accuracy. And yet, nearly thirty years later, we are only beginning to scratch the surface of what these texts have to offer. This volume advances the mission of the State Archives of Assyria project by bringing together fourteen essays that analyze the cultural production of the Neo-Assyrian Empire. The essays in this collection, born out of a seminar held at the University of Tsukuba in 2014, combine the study of multiple and varied sources with examination of specific corpuses and genres. They comprise historical studies of textual and pictographic sources; comparative literary studies concerning specific terms, concepts, and ideologies; and examinations of philological or historical problems of royal inscriptions that have some connection to archaeology. In addition to the editor, the contributors include Sebastian Fink, Grant Frame, Andreas Fuchs, Shuichi Hasegawa, Sanae Ito, Mikko Luukko, Raija Mattila, Jamie Novotny, Karen Radner, Saana Svaerd, Greta Van Buylaere, Chikako E. Watanabe, and Silvie Zamazalova. A collection of essays dealing with the Neo-Assyrian Empire. Essays include historical and literary studies using various textual and pictographic sources, as well as discussions of the philological or historiographical problems of royal inscriptions with some connection to archaeology. Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. The Royal Inscriptions of Tiglath-pileser III (744727 BC) and Shalmaneser V (726722 BC), Kings of Assyria (Royal Inscriptions of the Neo-Assyrian Period 1) carries on where the Assyrian Periods sub-series of the Royal Inscriptions of Mesopotamia (RIM) Project ended. The volume provides reliable, up-to-date editions of seventy-three royal inscriptions of Tiglath-pileser III and of his son and immediate successor Shalmaneser V, eleven late Neo-Assyrian inscriptions which may be attributed to one of those two eighth-century rulers, and eight texts commissioned by Assyrian queens and high-ranking officials. Following the style of the now-defunct RIM series, each text edition (with its English translation) is supplied with a brief introduction containing general information, a catalogue containing basic information about all exemplars, a commentary containing further technical information and notes, and a comprehensive bibliography.RINAP 1 also includes: (1) a general introduction to the reigns of Tiglath-pileser III and Shalmaneser V, the corpus of inscriptions, previous studies, and dating and chronology; (2) translations of the relevant passages of Mesopotamian king lists and chronicles; (3) several photographs of objects inscribed with texts of Tiglath-pileser III and Shalmaneser V; (4) indices of museum and excavation numbers and selected publications; and (5) indices of proper names (Personal Names; Geographic, Ethnic, and Tribal Names; Divine Names; Gate, Palace, and Temple Names; and Object Names). The RINAP Project is under the direction of G. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book explores aspects of the ancient civilization in West Asia, which has had a great impact on modern human society-agriculture, metallurgy, cities, writing, regional states, and monotheism, all of which appeared first in West Asia during the tenth to first millennia BC.The editors specifically use the term 'West Asia' since the 'Middle East' is seen as an Eurocentric term. By using this term, the book hopes to mitigate potential bias (i.e. historical and Western) by using a pure geographical term. However, the 'West Asia' region is identical to that of the narrower 'Middle East,' which encompasses modern Iran and Turkey from east to west and Turkey and the Arabian Peninsula from north to south. This volume assembles research from different disciplines, such as the natural sciences, archaeology and philology/linguistics, in order to tackle the question of which circumstances and processes these significant cultural phenomena occurred in West Asia. Scrutinizing subjects such as the relations between climate, geology and human activities, the origins of wheat cultivation and animal domestication, the development of metallurgy, the birth of urbanization and writing, ancient religious traditions, as well as the treatment of cultural heritage, the book undertakes a comprehensive analysis of West Asian Civilization that provided the common background to cultures in various areas of the globe, including Europe and Asia. These contributions will attempt to demonstrate a fresh vision which emphasizes the common cultural origin between Europe and West Asia, standing in opposition to the global antagonism symbolized by the theory of 'Clash of Civilizations.'.…
