It was revised by Tiffany Hunt and John Chandler in 1982. For this third edition the reviser has drawn heavily on the researches of George Frampton. The Giant is the pageant figure of The Salisbury Guild of Tailors and was kept in their hall on the North side of Milford Street (demolished in 1972). We do not know when The Giant first came into being, but the Tailor's Guild was formed during the first half of the 15th. Century, and received its charter in 1447. We know that the tailor's procession included a pageant in about 1503. But the Giant as such is not mentioned until 1570 when, according to the Guild's records, Gregory Clarke promised to "sett goinge for the accustomed pageant of Mydsomer feaste, the Giant, the three black boyes, the bearer of the Gyant and one person to play the Divell's part."* This is a FINE copy of the third edition, revised, with minimal shelf wear. 1982-09-01.…
