Inspired by a lecture on the need for dephosphorization in the Bessemer process, Thomas embarked on a quest to solve this problem, experimenting tirelessly until he stumbled upon a groundbreaking technique in 1878. His basic process, which used a basic lining in the converter, effectively removed phosphorus from molten iron. This discovery revolutionized steelmaking, enabling the production of high-quality steel from ores previously considered unusable and transformed the global steel industry. Professing a desire to give a 'true' account of a life in contrast to the somewhat hagiographic approach of some contemporary writers, Thomas' biographer, R. W. Burnie, sets out to construct 'a brief history of a very striking and individual character'. The details of Thomas' short life are narrated in 22 chapters, beginning with his early education, his work as a schoolmaster and police clerk whilst studying law and chemistry at night, his career, and his work-related travels, which took him everywhere from central Europe to New Zealand. The memoir also includes a postscript which reveals that Thomas left his considerable fortune to workers in steel production.

The life and letters of the metallurgist and inventor Sidney Gilchrist Thomas (1850-1885), known for discovering the method of eliminating phosphorus from pig iron in the Bessemer converter, which greatly advanced the commercial production of steel. The early trials took place at the Blaenavon Ironworks in South Wales, leading to a patent in 1878. His work related journeys took him around the world from Europe to Australia and the letters include many fascinating details of his travels and life in other countries. The biographical account linking the letters together is by Robert William Burnie (1851-1933), barrister and clergyman. Unique Collection of late19thcentury off-prints put together & the property of Percy Carlyle Gilchrist FRS 1851-1935. Eminent metalurgical chemist and cousin to Sidney Gilchrist Thomas with whom he developed the "Basic" Bessemer Steelmaking Process using phosphoric ore, whilst a chemist at the Blaenavon Ironworks Monmouthshire d…uring the 1870's. The first Bessemer "blow" on this process was made by Bolkow Vaughan & Co Middlesborough in April 1879 and became known as the Thomas-Gilchrist process and the product especially in Germany was called "Thomas " steel. Both men amassed large fortunes but Thomas died from consumption in 1885 aged 35. The collection comprises 13 publications all complete but in need of resoration and with both boards detached.The index (illustrated) lists these and include ILLUSTRATED surveys by "ENGINEERING" of Cambria Iron Company, Springfield Iron Works Albany & Rensslaer Iron & Steel Works Bethlehem Iron Co Works etc.
