La première partie comprend les bases physiques et chimiques de la photographie et du matériel photographique. La deuxième partie traite de l'application de la photographie en astronomie, météorologie, anatomie, microscopie. . "Le traité de Stein, illustré de nombreux types d'images, est probablement le texte le plus complet sur la photographie scientifique de l'époque.
