Sieben Stücke, zahlreiche Essays, Artikel und Reden sowie eine Menge unveröffentlichter Arbeiten wurden zerschnitten. Es entstand ein Berg von Texten unterschiedlicher Länge - zwischen zwei Zeilen und zehn Seiten. Sie wurden sortiert, viele verworfen, viele, viel zu viele für gut befunden, wieder wurde geklebt und geschnitten, wieder geordnet. Allmählich kritallisierte sich eine thematische Struktur heraus. Entstanden ist schließlich das Buch eines Lesers, zum Gebrauch für alle Leser und Freunde Rolf Hochhuths. Es ist zugleich ein Dialog zwischen Verlag, Herausgeber und Autor, der die Arbeit an dieser seiner Zwischenbilanz mit Ermunterung und Skepsis begleitet, durch die Öffnung seines Archivs, durch Aussonderung von ausgeschnittenen Texten und Neuvorschläge unterstützt hat.
