Those aspects related to sexual relationships and sexual behavior and the meaning of our "moral break…down" have been much discussed. The essays in this volume address themselves to a more subtle and potentially more meaningful question: What is the extent of deviance from traditional patterns of sexual relationships, and what have been the legal and political implications of widespread transgression of legal and, for many, personal codes or morality. This volume confronts the myths and the realities of the sexual revolution in America. As such it helps explain the limits as well as the goals of a new generation in search of new standards of conduct. John H. Gagnon is an associate professor in the department of sociology at the State University of New York. William Simon is program supervisor in sociology and anthropology at the Institute for Juvenile Research in Chicago. John H. Gagnon (November 22, 1931 February 11, 2016) was a sociologist of human sexuality who wrote and edited 15 books and over 100 articles. He collaborated with William Simon to develop the piece he is perhaps best recognized for: "Sexual Conduct: The Social Sources of Human Sexuality" (1973). He was Distinguished Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where he taught and from 1968 to 1998. During this period, he dedicated himself to advancing the field of sociology through his research. During the 1960s, the United States underwent a sexual revolution. The revolution was a social and cultural movement that resulted in liberalized attitudes toward sex and morality. Social norms were changing as sex became more widely discussed in society. Erotic media, such as films, magazines, and books, became more popular and gained widespread attention nationally. Sex was entering the public domain. Throughout history, the United States has undergone waves of feminism, in response to their needs and wants during the time. The introduction of the pill and second-wave feminism, allowed women to take control over their bodies and sexuality. Women using the pill could engage in sex with a lower risk of pregnancy. The revolution allowed women to rediscover their traditional and sex roles ascribed to them. Women's liberation movements sought to free women from social and moral confines. While women were rediscovering themselves, the gay rights movement was gaining the public eye. Public demonstrations and protests to challenge discrimination against sexuality occurred. While the movement did not begin to soar until the Stonewall riots of 1969, many still celebrate homosexuality during this time. Presumed First Edition, Presumed First Printing.
