Wang Xizhi nam als eerste het penseel ter hand en schreef het voorwoord van de verzameling gedichten die tot stand zou komen. De schoonheid en fijngevoeligheid van deze kalligrafie maakten er het grote meesterwerk uit de Chinese kalligrafiegeschiedenis van. Later verdween het manuscript in een tombe van een Chinese keizer. Het werk kreeg mythische allures. Honderden latere generaties wijdden zich aan het kopieren van deze schitterende kalligrafie.
