Chapter 16 by Sir Edmund Hillary and appendices by members of the expedition. Book has blue boards, gilt text on spine only. Unclipped (25/-net), wrap-around DJ by W. Hea…ton Cooper. 232 pp. plus: Appendix I Diary of the Expedition September 1952 - June 1953 compiled by Wilfred Noyce, Appendix II Preparations for the Everest Expedition, 1953 Organization, Appendix III Memorandum Everest, 1953 Basis for Planning ( The Ascent, The Preparatory Period, The Expedition Timetable), Appendix IV notes on Certain Items of Equipment by Charles Wylie, Appendix V Oxygen Equipment T.D. Bourdillon [signatory], Appendix VI Diet By Griffith Pugh and George Band [signatory], Appendix VII Physiology and Medicine By Griffith Pugh and Michael Ward[signatory], Appendix VIII Everest 1953 Assault Load Tables, Appendix IX Acknowledgements of Assistance in Launching the Expedition, Glossary, Index. Book slightly rubbed at tail of spine, unsunned boards retain their original colour, top edge dyed blue, corners good, gilt text as new, book is slightly cocked and bowed, fon and address, Bradley ffep, some foxing evident. DJ has darkened spine, edge and extremity wear with some chipping and tears, the longest at top rear panel being 1.3 cm. Laid in is a commemorative/souvenir menu for a dinner at the Hyde Park Hotel in Knightsbridge, London on Wednesday, 21st October, 1953. The outside of this shows the route to the summit with the various numbered level camps. The front states: Conquest of Everest 29,002 feet 29th MAY 1953. The inside carries(on the left) the Toast List (The Queen, The Everest Team. Proposed by Mr. Donald McCullough Supported by Group Captain D.F. McIntyre, A.F.C. (who had flown over Everest with the Duke of Hamilton 20 years previously). The right side carries the menu of the meal. October 21st, 1953 was also the date of the Premiere of the movie, 'The Conquest of Everest' at the Warner Cinema. The premiere was attended by Queen Elizabeth, Prince Phillip and members of the expedition team. Sir John Hunt's daughter presented a bouquet to the Queen who had become the monarch at roughly the same date as the successful ascent. At the left bottom of the menu are found the signatures of: T.D Bourdillon, George Band, George Lowe, Michael Ward and another signature that I surmise to be that of Charles Wylie, the organizing secretary for the expedition. The name at the top left of the menu is the same as the fon in the book. The only Bradley mention in the Index of the book is in reference to 'Bradley Boots' which was the specifically designed footwear for this expedition. The original owner of the book also had a twin brother named Harry and I speculate that one of them is the, " Mr. Bradley" referred to by Charles Wylie on p.251. A most interesting item of mountaineering/historical importance. Digital pictures available on request. Bookseller's Inventory # 110024. Charles Evans (illustratore). Four Members of Climbing Party.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Fair. xx, 300 pages. Color frontispiece. Illustrations (some in color). Maps. Appendices. Glossary. Index. Cover has some wear and soiling, especially at top and bottom of spine. Bookplate of Mr. and Mrs. L. Paul Bremer, III inside front cover! Foreword by H.R.H. The Duke of Edinburgh. The complete, author…itative and deeply moving story of the momentous conquest of Mount Everest by Sir John Hunt's British Expedition, including Sir Edmund Hillary who gives his own personal account of the final assault on the summit. In his Foreword, H. R. H. The Duke of Edinburgh writes: "In the human terms of physical effort and endurance alone, it will live in history as a shining example to all mankind." The 1953 British Mount Everest expedition was the ninth mountaineering expedition to attempt the first ascent of Mount Everest, and the first confirmed to have succeeded when Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary reached the summit on 29 May 1953. Led by Colonel John Hunt, it was organized and financed by the Joint Himalayan Committee. John Hunt, a British Army Colonel, was serving on the staff at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe when to his surprise he was invited by the Joint Himalayan Committee of the Alpine Club and the Royal Geographical Society to lead the British Everest expedition of 1953. The committee decided that Hunt's experience of military leadership, together with his credentials as a climber, would provide the best chance for expedition to succeed. News of the expedition's success reached London in time to be released on the morning of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation, on 2 June 1953. Henry Cecil John Hunt, Baron Hunt, KG, CBE, DSO (22 June 1910 7 November 1998) was a British Army officer who is best known as the leader of the successful 1953 British expedition to Mount Everest. Sir Edmund Percival Hillary KG ONZ KBE (20 July 1919 11 January 2008) was a New Zealand mountaineer, explorer, and philanthropist. On 29 May 1953, Hillary and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers confirmed to have reached the summit of Mount Everest. They were part of the ninth British expedition to Everest, led by John Hunt. From 1985 to 1988 he served as New Zealand's High Commissioner to India and Bangladesh and concurrently as Ambassador to Nepal. ASSOCIATION COPY: Lewis Paul Bremer III (born September 30, 1941) is a retired American diplomat. He was the second de facto head of state of Iraq as leader of the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) following the 2003 invasion of Iraq by the United States, from May 2003 until June 2004. Bremer graduated from Yale University in 1963 and went on to earn an MBA from Harvard University in 1966. He later continued his education at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris, where he earned a Certificate of Political Studies (CEP). During the 1970s, Bremer held various domestic posts with the U.S. State Department, including posts as an assistant to Henry Kissinger from 1972 to 1976. He accompanied Kissinger on shuttle diplomacy missions to Israel, Syria, and Egypt to resolve the Yom Kippur War in 1973. He was Deputy Chief of Mission in Oslo, Norway, from 1976 to 1979, returning to the United States to take a post of deputy executive secretary of the Department of State, where he remained from 1979 until 1981. In 1981, he was promoted to executive secretary and special assistant to Alexander Haig. Ronald Reagan appointed Bremer as ambassador to the Netherlands in 1983 and ambassador-at-large for counterterrorism and coordinator for counterterrorism in 1986. Bremer retired from the Foreign Service in 1989 and became managing director at Kissinger and Associates, a worldwide consulting firm founded by Henry Kissinger. A career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of career minister, Bremer received the State Department Superior Honor Award, two Presidential Meritorious Service Awards, and the Distinguished Honor Award from the Secretary of State. Bremer was appointed by Presiden. Charles Evans (pen sketches) (illustratore).

Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Good. London, 1855., 1855. Good. - Octavo, 8 inches high by 5 inches wide. Softcover, bound in printed self-wraps. Once likely bound in with other pamphlets, the book is disbound with the cover page and last page detached. 14 pages. The pages are slightly soiled and the pamphlet was folded twice horizontally. Good. E…xceedingly RARE. First (only) edition. On December 11, 1854, The Times of London editorialized: "We felt it our duty a few days ago to call attention to the fact that, if disease or wounds were to incapacitate Lord Raglan for continuing his labours in the Crimea, the command of our army would devolve upon Sir Richard England, and we suggested that such a change ought by all means to be provided against." The Times goes on to forcefully attack England for his actions as commander of the Scinde field force during the Afghan wars in 1842. "In the beginning of the year 1842 Sir Richard England commanded the Scinde field force. It was extremely important to reinforce General Nott at Candahar, where he was in want of men, money, and ammunition. Near the village of Hykulzye, at the foot of the Bolan Pass, General England was encountered by some Asiatic troops, and repulsed with the loss of nearly 100 killed and wounded. It was of the utmost importance that he should advance, or, at any rate, not retreat, for General Nott had written to him that either halting or retiring would have the worst effect throughout Afghanistan, and would be more injurious to his present position than 20,000 of the enemy in the field. But General England did retreat. His troops were eager to renew the attack; Colonel Stacy, the political agent who accompanied him, undertook to storm the position with a hundred, or even eighty men - thrice he begged for permission, and thrice he was refused. General England retired to Quettah, and there began to intrench himself, leaving Nott, the honour of England, and the destinies of India to their fate. The defences before which he retreated were not formidable. They, were thrown up in a few hours, and, when afterwards taken, some of our officers rode over them without knowing where they were. General England wrote that the enemy were a hundred to one stronger than any one expected, though they were fewer than he was informed that they would be. Finally, he strove to throw the blame on the Sepoys, whom he would not allow to renew the attack. 'The seeming unwillingness of England,' says Mr. Kaye, 'to redeem his character by a vigorous movement in advance irritated General Nott more than the disaster itself.'" In this letter to his brother-in-law, A.F.W. Montagu, England describes his actions at that time in great detail and proffers a defense of them. Following his letter of December 28, 1854 from Sebastopol are published letters written in 1842 defending him from Major-General Charles Napier, the Governor General of India Lord Ellenborough and a letter from his Secretary T.H. Maddock. Finally there is an 1855 letter praising England from General Sir George De Lacy Evans. The British army officer General Sir Richard England (1793-1883) was born at Fort Detroit at a time when it was part of Upper Canada. In 1841 he took command of the Bombay Army division and was dispatched to the relief of Colonel Palmer at Ghuznee and General Nott at Kandahar. In 1854 he was placed in command of the 3rd Division in the Crimean war.
