A letter discussing a gentleman and his reference. Sir James Dewar 1842 - 1923 was a Scottish chemist and physicist. Educated at the University of Cambridge, later a professor at the university & the Royal Institution, London. He was appointed Fullerian Professor of Chemistry in 1877. After Tyndall retired in 1887 Dewar was appointed Superintendent of the House and Director of the Laboratory. Interests included molecular & atomic spectroscopy, early work included the description of the formulae of bezene. Best known for his process to liquify oxygen and the flask, bearing his name, to contain it. Size is 177mm x 115mm. Condition is good. Light folding creases. Light gum marks to rear. Ref 19232.
