[ix], 200pp., a colour frontispiece and 4 black and white plates. Sir George Mackenzie of Rosehaugh (1636-1691) was a Scottish lawyer, Lord Advocate, essayist and writer of legal, political, and antiquarian books. He turned his attention to the histories of the leading families of Scotland, ans drew extensively from the work of his fellow advocate, Sir Patrick Lyon of Carse. His 'The Families of Scotland' describes the armorial bearings and genealogy of some 170 Scottish families and many cadet branches. The work was never published, but Mackenzie left it in manuscript. Attempts were made in the 20th century to have the work published, and the present book contains a full transcript of one of the surviving copies of Mackenzie's 'Families' as the main text of the volume, together with editorial footnotes. Section 2 of the Introduction identifies 21 surviving manuscript versions of the work and considers their provenance, authorship and dating. Section 3 offers short biographies of the individuals involved, and Section 4 some editorial notes on the main transcript. The book is bound in the original dark blue boards with gold titling on the spine. The book is in excellent condition and the contents are tight and clean with no inscription. …

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition, Limited Edition. This is a two-volume copy of WOODSTOCK, or THE CAVALIER, A Tale of the Year Sixteen Hundred and Fifty-one, by the great Scottish novelist Sir Walter Scott (1770-1832). It is the 22nd of his Waverley novels which, for nearly a century, were the most-read novels in Europe. Woodstock was first published in 1826. It surrounds the legend of the Good Devil of Woodstock, which in 1649 supposedly tormented parliamentary commissioners who had taken possession of a royal residence at Woodstock, Oxfordshire. The story deals with the escape of Charles II in 1652, and his final triumphant entry into London on 29 May 1660. These books are part of an incomplete set I have, which is also listed here. Between 1892 and 1894, the Boston publisher Estes and Lauriat published the collected Waverley novels. The introductions of each were written by the Scottish poet and critic Andrew Lang (1844-1912). In 48 volumes, they published a leather set, a marbled-cover set and a plain set. I have volumes of the plain set. By 'plain', I mean attractive navy blue boards with ivory title plates on the spine. The publisher has stated 'Large Paper'; the paper is thick and of best quality. There were 1000 copies of this set printed. This is set #679. That is stamped on each book in red. There is red type on the title page and on the tissue paper fronting each illustration. Each book has six black and white illustrations. The illustrations in these two books are covered with tissue paper. In one book, the front one fell out and it was placed inside the back cover. The illustrations are stated as original etchings and/or etching from paintings, by William Brassey Hole (Scottish, 1846-1917), Jean Geoffroy (French, 1853-1924), Ricardo de los Ríos (Spanish, 1846-1929), and James Hopwood (English, 1800-1850). In both cases, the title panels are faded and scratched. Volume I has a small tear on one page of the introduction, and light scuffing to the cover. Volume II has a washed-out spot on the cover. Both books have fully-intact gold trim; only the tops of the pages were originally trimmed. In the case of both books, the interiors are perfect. No foxing. It appears that no one ever read them. Volume II had definitely not been opened until now. William Brassey Hole, Jean Geoffroy, Ricardo de los Ríos, James Hopwood (illustratore). …

Bound in full vintage mottled tan calf titled in gilt with elaborate formal and floral gilt decorations on the spines and with triple gilt rules framing the covers. All edges are marbled. The covers are slightly rubbed and scuffed with wear to the corners and head and tail of the spines. The second volume's spine is lightly stained. 359 pages; and 370 pages respectively, illustrated with a total of 9 plates consisting of an engraved frontispiece to the first volume plus 4 engraved plates in each volume. The marbled endpapers and pastedowns are rubbed and soiled and there is some occasional minor soiling internally. Very good. The first 2 volumes only of a 3 volume set, complete in themselves with the tales here numbered 1 through 9, concluding with the Tale of Sadak and Kalasrade and their continuation. The the tale titled in the English editions as "Mirglip, the Persian; or, Fincal, the Dervise of the Groves" was presumably published in the third volume. From the collection of "Mr. Charles Comte de la Vaulx Baron de Vrecourt Guidon de Gendarmerie" with his elaborately illustrated Armorial bookplate, engraved by Dominique Collin in 1752, mounted on the front pastedown of each volume. This French translation of "The Tales of the Genii" is attributed to Jean-Baptiste-Rene Robinet.Modeled on the "Arabian Nights", "The Tales of the Genii: or, the Delightful Lessons of Horam, The Son of Asmar" were written by the English author James Ridley. Published anonymously, Ridley originally passed his tales off as authentic stories penned by a Persian Imam named Horam supposedly translated into English by Sir Charles Morrell.Educated at University College, Oxford, the English author James Kenneth Ridley (1736-1765) is best known for "The Tales of the Genii", an Oriental pastiche inspired by the "Arabian Nights". Ridley also authored two novels, "The History of James Lovegrove, Esq." and "The Schemer, or the Universal Satirist.".…
