'Book of Grey Owl' (272pp), was first published in 1938, this is the 'Cheap Edition' of 1941. 'Pilgrims' (282pp) was first published in 1935, this is a twelfth impression of 1942. 'Half-Breed' (345pp), was first published in 1939, this is a third impression of 1942. All are illustrated with photos. All have edge wear, chipping, small loss and short closed tears to tops and bottoms of jackets and spine, some overall dust and time staining, corners slightly rubbed and bruised, some slight offsetting to endpapers, none are price clipped, no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copies for their age. Grey Owl was the name British born Archibald Belaney (1888-1938), chosen for himself when he took on a First Nations identity as an adult. Born in England and migrating to Canada in the first decade of the 20th century, Belaney rose to prominence as a notable author, lecturer and apostle of the wilderness. Adopted into the Ojibwe nation, Belaney learned native harvesting techniques and trapping skills. The pivotal moment of departure for his early conservation work was when he began his relationship with a young Iroquois woman named Gertrude Bernard, who assisted in his transition from trapper to conservationist. In working with the National Parks Branch, Belaney became the subject of many films, and was established as the 'caretaker of park animals' at Riding Mountain National Park in Manitoba in 1931. Together with his numerous articles, books, films and lectures, his views on conservation reached audiences beyond the borders of Canada, challenging people to re evaluate their relationship with nature. His conservation views largely focused on humans' negative impact on nature through their commodification of nature's resources for profits, and a need for humans to develop a respect for the natural world. Although some conservationists have called his adoption of a First Nation identity fraudulent, recognition has included biographies, a historic plaque at his birthplace and a 1999 biopic about his life by the director Richard Attenborough. Mauve Cloth. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Poor. First Edition. 266pp. Very scarce first UK edition of this autobiographical work by the famous artist. This copy belonged to Edward Kenneth Center who was a British artist who worked closely with Frank Brangwyn. He has signed it to the front endpaper. Another biro gift inscription 'To the master best wishes from Edgar' 1948 to the front endpaper. 69 photogravures to the reverse of the book. Some fading to the head and tail of the spine and to the head of the front board where the wrapper has been chipped. 1.1cm tear to the margin of one leaf and a 4mm tear to the margin of one leaf - now both expertly repaired and bearly noticable. Some foxing to the fore-edges. A soil mark - 1cm in length to the tail of the plate with a ghost mark to the opposite leaf. The wrapper is unattractive with large sections of loss to the tail of the front panel and the head of both the front and rear panels. Some creases too. A scarce copy of the UK first edition with the provenance of having belonged to a British artist.…

Stanley Jones to Sir John Lavery on Stanley's personalised writing paper - 169 Jerningham Road, New Cross, London SE14 Telephone: New Cross 4109 - dated 26th Feb 1930, in blue ink on folded ivory paper with central horizontal crease, inscription and signature of Sir John Lavery in black ink to the verso. In full: 'Sir John Lavery, L.L.D., R.A., R.S.A. Dear Sir, As I am a collector I wondered whether you would please be kind enough to send me your autograph. I am enclosing a stamped envelope and thank you in anticipation of a favourable reply. I remain, Yours sincerely, E. Stanley Jones.' To the verso: 'Yours very truly John Lavery. 1930.' Sir John Lavery (18561941) was an Irish portrait and society painter associated with the Glasgow Boys. Born in Belfast and raised in Scotland, he trained in Glasgow and Paris before establishing a successful career in London. Lavery became known for elegant portraits of aristocracy, politicians and social figures. He was knighted in 1918 and served as an official war artist during World War I. His wife, Lady Hazel Lavery, famously appeared on Irish bank-notes for decades. …

After thanking him for his letter Lavery writes: 'Our "friend" [Braynard?] when he called to ask for my signature told me many things, amongst others that the A. G. B. I. had already given him a grant some time back and that [Charleton?], Brangwyn and I were his sponsors | I had a hazy recollection of him and made up my mind that I would sign his paper and let the Secretary of the A. G. B. I. know the circumstance, which I did do that same day. I have since been pestered by his letters which I have paid no attention to.' He is sorry that his 'signing of his paper should have thrown him to you and it will certainly be a lesson to me to make sure of my man next time'. He concludes by apologising for his recent absence from A. G. B. I. meetings, explaining that this is 'owing to the work I have been doing for the Propaganda Bureau and now for the Admiralty'. He will be 'leaving the country' in 'the course of some weeks', but hopes to be 'still here on the 20th February'.…
