Aggiungi al carrelloPaper. Condizione: Good. First Edition. An Original Letter written and signed by Sir Thomas Longmore to Sir Joihn Furley discussing Christian Albert Theodor Billroth work on warfare and its impact on the medical establishment. Dated 1892The letter reads - My Dear Furley, The celebrated Austrian Professor and Surgeon Billroth who was raised to the 'Chambre des Seigneurs' about a year ago is a member of the 'Delegation Austrichienne' whatever that maybe, has been making a speech on the effects of the new ?.? and projectiles that seem to have made a great sensation on the continent. He regards the effects likely to result from them to be more terrible than which were employed in the war of 1870-1871 effects which he witnessed at Wissembourg Woesth and elsewhere and he has been urging the Government to make material alterations in the ambulance arrangements for the field. Has Mundy by accident sent you any reports of Billroths advice of the changes in the ambulance organisation what he proposes? If so, I would greatly like to see any report on the subject, and if not, can you get Mundy to send any accounts these may have been printed in Vienna newspapers regarding them? I hope Mrs Furley and you have escaped the pestilence. One of my servants is now very gravely ill from its effects and his wife has just come down in this past day. After nearly three weeks confinement in his room. Our mutual kindest regards to you both, my sincerely yours Thos Longmore. Sir Thomas Longmore 1816-1895 was Surgeon-General and professor of military surgery at the Army Medical School at Netley Hospital. Prior to this appointment, he had a long and distinguished career as a military doctor and surgeon, notably serving during every major engagement of the Crimean War, even while suffering from frostbite. He wrote numerous reports, manuals and treatises on several topics, such as the development of osteomyelitis following gunshot wounds. He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He was knighted in 1886. Sir John Furley, 1836-1919 was an English humanitarian who worked to improve medical care both in wartime and at home. He was an active member of the Red Cross from its foundation, and one of the founders of St John Ambulance Association, set up to promote first aid training. He travelled to Paris and South Africa to bring humanitarian supplies, and also produced various inventions to help the wounded, including some types of stretcher. He received a knighthood and Order of the Companions of Honour for his charitable works. Provenance: From the family of autograph collector Emily Mary Rose Lee (1869-1949), wife of Colonel William Crawford Walton (1864-1937). Emily was the daughter of William Lee, Professor of Ecclesiastical History at the University of Glasgow from 1874 to 1886, and granddaughter of John Lee (1779-1859), Principal of Edinburgh University from 1840 to 1859.
