Raper James Waters (18561937) was a professional photographer from Sacramento, California. He was first active as a photographer in Gold Hill, Nevada, in the 1880s. Following this, he returned to California, and had studios in Berkeley and San Francisco between the late 1880s and mid-1920s. Offered here is a collection of fifteen of Waters' photographs from around Mount Shasta, likely from the late 1880s or 1890s. The photographs are mainly from places in Siskiyou County, where Mount Shasta is located, including shots of the towns of Sisson (now Mount Shasta) and Dunsmuir, Sisson and Dunsmuir are on the Siskiyou Trail, an ancient Native American footpath running from the San Francisco area to Portland, Oregon. The Central Pacific Railroad Company completed a train line along the Siskiyou Trail in 1887; one shot from an unknown location shows railroad tracks rounding a curve among felled trees. Just outside of Dunsmuir is the Shasta Springs resort (mislabeled here as Shasta Bottling Works), famous for its springwater the fountains of water in the photograph are from pressurized pipes coming from the springs. Other captioned photographs show Castle Crags, hikers summiting Mount Shasta, Mossbrae Falls, and Castle Lake (mislabeled as Crystal Lake). Photographs also show campers with their tent, small houses, a canoe on a lake, and snowy winter scenes. Overall a striking set of photographs. Fine contrast, overall fine condition. Fifteen photographs, approximately 4 ½ x 7 ½ inches. Each mounted on heavy cardboard backing approximately 5 ½ x 8 ½ inches, which is mounted on heavy cardboard of approximately 8 x 10 ½ inches. Unknown if photographs are stamped verso due to mounting. Some with recent captions on the largest mount; some captions likely incorrect (see description).

A group of 13 cabinet size albumen photographs of various locations in Northern California near Mount Shasta. Dating from 1893, the circular images measuring approximately 9x9 mm (3 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches) with white background measuring approximately 12.510.3 cm (5 x 4 inches) are affixed to slightly larger period card stock mounts, five of which are gilt edged. The location for each picture is written on the verso of the mount and all but one are dated. They include: ? Shasta Springs, not dated ? On the Shasta Spring trail, June 1893 ? The log cabin, Biglow?, California, June 1893 ? Mossbrae Falls California in Sacramento River, June 1893 ? Mossbrae Falls California on Sacramento River, June 1893 ? Castle Crag, July 1893 ? Sissons Lake, July 1893 ? Shasta View, Castle Crag, July 1893 ? Mount Shasta Country, July 1893 ? Shasta View, Castle Crag, July 1893 ? Mount Shasta County California, July 1893 ? Horse Shoe Bend, McCloud River California, View up River, July 1893 ? Road to Soda Spring Castle Crag California, August 1893 The Southern Pacific Company's "Shasta Route" opened in 1887. The railroad developed a division point on the flats south of Upper Soda Springs which led to the creation of the modern town of Dunsmuir. The Castle Rock Mineral Springs Bottling Works was founded in 1889 in Dunsmuir. George Washington Bailey operated a resort across the river from the Castle Rock Mineral Springs. A footbridge provided access from the hotel to the springs, a popular tourist destination on the "Shasta Route." One of the photos shows a woman on the footbridge with water shooting into the air from a fountain in the background. A sign attached to the bridge calls for agents in all the principal cities of the United States to sell "the products of these wonderful springs." Castle Rock "operated profitably until 1906, when the San Francisco earthquake ended its plans to further divide up and develop the area commercially. The company subsequently went bankrupt during the 1929 stock market crash. In 1943 the State of California purchased 925 acres of the Castle Rock Springs property, which was the beginning of Castle Crags State Park" (Wikipedia). Very good or better overall. (#166253).
