Vintage Book The series, "Penguin New Writing" was a fine example of the literary periodical which ran from 1936 to 1950. It was edited by John Lehman, who exsablished a stout anti-Fascist tone in the series' early years. Many authors of notable repute have appeared in its pages, including George Orwell, W. S. Auden, Christopher Isherwood, C. Day Lewis, and Edith Sitwell. In this issue, Number 27 of the series, we find works by Edith Sitwell; her brother, Osbert Sitwell; Louis McNiece; C. Day Lewis, Stephen Spender; Annabel Farjeon and many of other fine writers. As well as the best of the New Writing, there are reproductions of then-new works of art by the likes of Robert Medley, Michael Ayrton, Laurence Gowing (all in color); and monochrome reproductions of works by Roger Furse, Gordon Herickx, and John Melville. This vintage book, "England Reclaimed: a Book of Eclogues", contains Osbert Sitwell's rustic and pastoral eclogues - lovely poems of description and imagination capturing a certain essence of England past. The book was published by Duckworth in London in 1927. This is the First Trade Edition. Osbert Sitwell, in a brief preface to his charming book of poems, had this to say: "The sequence of poems, which the author has the honour to present to the public, represents the work of two years, and forms in itself a complete volume. Actually, however, it is only the first part of a trilogy, on the second volume of which he is already at work. The scope of the other two volumes at which he aims is indicated by the "Introduction", which is intended to cover the whole series. The first book consists entirely of eclogues, rustic and pastoral poems; the second will deal with a country town, the third with the cosmopolitan life of the cities.
