Erik Strömgren blev student fra Metropolitanskolen 1927 og tog medicinsk embedseksamen 1934. Fra første færd stilede han efter en grundig uddannelse som psykiater. Selv erkendte han den betydning Freud og schweizeren E. Bleuler havde haft for hans holdning til faget. Han dygtiggjorde sig dels ved ansættelse på Rigshospitalets psykiatriske klinik, hvis leder H. Helweg Erik Strömgren kom i nær og fagligt udbytterig berøring med, dels ved udenlandske studieophold, især i München. I denne by fandtes, i det dér blomstrende institut for psykiatrisk arvebiologi og epidemiologi, den solide jordbund for den forskning Erik Strömgren havde sat som sit mål allerede fra sin studentertid: at yde et videnskabeligt funderet dansk bidrag til undersøgelserne over sindslidelsernes statistiske forekomst og arvegang inden for en afgrænset befolkningsgruppe. Erik Strömgren følte sig i særlig gæld til instituttets leder, Bruno Schulz for metodologisk påvirkning. Hans indtrængende arbejde, der var forudgået af fremlæggelse af en selvstændig statistisk metode (1935) resulterede i dissertationen Beitrdge zur psychiatrischen Erblehre, 1938, et værk af internationalt format i hvilket der, ved dets nøjagtighed, kunne påvises væsentlig sikrere tal for sygdomsrisikoen for sindslidelserne. Erik Strömgren foretog året efter i skriftet Episodiske Psykoser, 1940, en klar, pædagogisk gennemgang af vanskelige grænsetilfælde og udredte deres nosologiske placering, og han fortsatte disse bestræbelser i den lille, fængslende og originale bog Om Bevidst-hedsforstyrrelser, 1945, hvori det gennemgås hvilke abnormtilstande der er en følge af ændringer i de forskellige former for sådanne forstyrrelser. 1943 var Erik Strömgren blevet ansat ved statshospitalet ved Århus og samtidig blevet lektor ved Århus univ. med undervisning i psykiatrisk genetik. To år senere overtog han stillingen som overlæge ved hospitalet og udnævntes ved samme lejlighed til professor i psykiatri. Hermed var hans livsbane afstukket. I de følgende år udviklede han sit hospital til et centrum for psykiatrisk forskning ved at udvide det med specialinstitutter for hjernepatologi, demografi, cytogenetik, retspsykiatri og psykofarmakologi. Han varetog såvel overlægestilligen som professoratet frem til 1980. Ved skabelsen af denne forskningsinstitution virkede Erik Strömgren inspirerende på det hjemlige psykiatriske arbejde og medvirkede især til dets anseelse uden for landets grænser. Hans organisatoriske evne blev i de følgende år taget i brug ved tilrettelæggelsen af det psykiatriske hospitalsvæsen rundt om i landet. He was born in Södertälje and died in Gothenburg. Torsten Sjögren was professor of psychiatry at Karolinska Institutet from 1945 to 1961. He was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1951. SjögrenLarsson syndrome is named after him (along with Tage Larsson) as well as MarinescoSjögren syndrome. He was also involved in the characterization of juvenile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis. He should not be confused with Henrik Sjögren, after whom Sjögren's syndrome is named.
