In very good condition, spine and corners lightly rubbed, owner's inscription. Xvi plus 243pp, with comprehensive Introduction, including 2 black and white maps, and detailed descriptions of the content of each chapter. The 1845 expedition sought the Northwest Passage but became trapped in ice near King William Island in 1846. Sir John Franklin died on June 11, 1847. Captain Francis McClintock, funded by Lady Franklin, discovered the only written record of Franklin's expedition at Victory Point in 1859, which revealed the ships HMS Erebus and HMS Terror were abandoned after being locked in ice, with survivors attempting to walk to safety. The 1859 discovery by McClintock was critical in establishing a timeline, which ultimately helped clear the expedition of early, scandalous rumours of cannibalism, by showing they had survived longer than initially thought. Skewes was one of the first to put all the information from the subsequent searches into a single narrative of the fateful events, highlighting findings that revealed 129 crewmen vanished in the Arctic, with Inuit testimony and ship records uncovering a story of entrapment and death. …
