"De statu religionis et reipublicae Carolo Quinto Caesare Commentarii". - NDB 24, 499-500: Johannes Sleidanus (auch Sleidan. eigentlich Johannes Philippi), war Baptist, Geschichtsschreiber, Diplomat (1506 oder 1508 -1556). Als ältester Sohn einer aufstrebenden landstädtischen Familie erhielt S. eine akademische Ausbildung. . 1536 vermittelte Johannes Sturm ihm eine Anstellung als Sekretär des Bischofs von Paris, Kardinal Jean du Bellay (1492-1560). Dieser, eine führende Persönlichkeit am Hofe Franz' I., Kirchenreformer, Kunstförderer und Gegner der Habsburger, zielte auf die Überwältigung Karls V. durch ein Bündnis zwischen der franz. Krone und den dt. Protestanten. S. fiel dabei die Aufgabe eines Mittelsmanns zu und er reiste mehrmals in diplomatischen Missionen ins Reich, so 1540 zum Religionsgespräch von Hagenau, wo er in Johannes Calvin, Martin Bucer und Jakob Sturm künftige Förderer traf, 1541 zum Reichstag von Regensburg, 1544 zum Reichstag von Speyer. Durch zwei gedruckte Reden, eine an die Reichsstände, eine an den Kaiser, in denen er den Protestantismus heilsgeschichtlich rechtfertigte und den Kaiser durch eine geschichtstheologische Reichsidee auf den Kampf gegen den Antichristen in Rom und gegen die Türken zu verpflichten suchte, wurde S. als Publizist bekannt. . Als die Bündnispolitik Du Bellays nach dem Frieden von Crépy gescheitert schien, ging S. 1544 nach Straßburg. Seine dortigen Freunde, Bucer und die Brüder Sturm, erwirkten, daß er 1545 vom Schmalkaldischen Bund eingestellt wurde mit dem Auftrag, eine offiziöse Geschichte der Reformation zu verfassen. Die Kanzleien der Bundesgenossen erhielten Anweisung, ihn mit Material zu versorgen. . setzte S. die Arbeit an der Reformationsgeschichte fort, die unter dem Titel De statu religionis et reipublicae Carolo Quinto Caesare Commentarii" 1555 gedruckt wurde. Weder die Kritik einiger luth. Fürsten und Räte noch die päpstl. Indizierung verhinderten, daß Dutzende von Ausgaben und Übersetzungen das Werk in ganz Europa verbreiteten.". 1.

Sleidanus (1506-56), gebürtig aus Schleiden/Eifel, angestellt beim Sch…malkaldischen Bund als Historiker, lieferte hier die wohl beste zeitgenössische Darstellung der Reformationszeit, indem er ganz im Sinne und mit den Methoden einer kritischen Historiographie Quellenstudium betrieb und seine Belege anführte (vgl. ADB XXVIII, 454-61). Obwohl Sleidanus auch außerhalb der reformierten/lutherischen Kreise Zuspruch und Anerkennung erhielt, wurde der Titel 1558 auf den römischen Index gesetzt. In dieser Neuauflage von 1560 (zuerst 1555) reicht der Berichtszeitraum bis 1556 (Todesjahr des Autor), des weiteren ist auch die Apologia aufgenommen, in der er sich gegen seine Kritiker zu Wehr setzte. Etwas berieben; gebräunt und angeschmutzt; Deckel gering gewölbt; am Rücken mit Rest eines Bibl.-Schildchens und Inventarnummer; fliegender Vorsatz mit erheblichem , folgende 4 Bll. mit geringererm Wurmfraß in der oberen Ecke; auf Titelei alte hs. Besitzvermerke, ein unleserlicher Rundstempel sowie ein kaum entzifferbarer adeliger Exlibrisstempel. Beiliegende 2 alte antiquarische Titelaufnahmen. LA.

Brugman", part of first free endpaper cut off, full vellum spitsel binding, faded title in ink on spine, very good and clean copy, written by Johannes S…leidanus or Sleidan (1506 - 31 October 1556) who was a Luxembourgish historian and annalist of the Reformation.Johannes Sleidanus (1506-1556) was born as Jean Philippson, later named himself after his native village, Schleiden (in Latin, Sleida). He studied ancient languages and literatures at Liège and Cologne, and law and jurisprudence at Paris and Orléans. He became professor in Strasbourg and often involved then in French and Church diplomatic missions. His main work is : De statu religionis et rei publicae Carolo V. Caesare commentarii the condition of the religion and the state under the Emperor Charles V.; and this - De quattuor monarchiis, a textbook of world history under the criterion of the Biblical theory of the four world realms and important in the study of Reformation history and theology. Sleidanus was one of the three historians of the German Reformation who dominated both Catholic and Protestant citations, the other two being Hospinien and Chytraeus.
