Light fraying to spine ends. Front endpaper darkened. Rear free endpaper neatly removed. Light scattered foxing in text. A better copy than this sounds. No underlining. No…highlighting. No margin notes. Bound in the original brown cloth, with blind-stamped decorations. Gilt lettering on the spine has faded some but is still legible. The following quotation comes from Smith's entry in the DNB: "His drollery produced uproarious merriment. Mackintosk is described as rolling on the floor, and his servants had often to leave the room in fits of laughter. A MEMOIR OF THE REVEREND SYDNEY SMITH, by his daughter, Lady Holland, with a selection from his letters, edited by Mrs. Austin, 2 vols, 1855. contains many anecdotes collected by Smith's widow, and after her death, prepared by his daughter." .
