Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 232 pp., illustrations, bibliography. front cover is scuffed. This book examines an enigmatic group of people, the Moldavian Csángós, whose very existence as a group has been debated since the 19th century. The Csángós form a historical minority consisting of Roman Catholics that speak a Hungarian vernacular and live in an overwhelmingly Orthodox region of Moldavia in North-East Romania. Perceptions of and research on the Csángós often depict them as worthy of study due to their archaic culture and language or due to their socio-political and minority rights status as a contested group with perspective to their origins. This volume takes a new look at the Csángós, in the era of globalization, and examines perspectives on traditional culture and bilingualism in light of postmodern and transnational opportunities and challenges. The articles in this volume include new perspectives on qualitative research of minority groups through the presentation of in-depth research on Csángós based on extensive fieldwork and first-hand accounts of contemporary conditions. This text will be of interest to scholars in cultural studies, anthropology and applied linguistics with interests in minority communities.…

Soft Cover. Condizione: Near Fine. Text in English. 168 pp. Today, a hundred years after the time when Western scholars rushed to document the traditional ways of livelihood of the peoples of Western Siberia, this area is again of topical interest. Tundra and taiga provide a complex setting for life for the approximately 19,000 Khants living in the area. The vast majority of the old-growth forests in Europe are located in Northern Russia. In 1998 the Finnish forest industry for the first time expanded its procurement area to the Khanty-Mansi area. Yet there is still not enough knowledge of the natural resources of these areas, much less the cultural. It is our duty in the West to ensure that the Khant culture is not destroyed by the West's need for natural gas, oil and wood products. This book is one way of taking a glimpse at the traditional Khant way of thinking and living in harmony with nature. This study is in line with current trends in research concerning time. It is proved that nonliterate cultures are not as non-time-conscious as they have often been presented. The way time and history is measured is just different from the ways the majority use.…

Scholars, artists and other professionals have sought contacts from Europe throughout the centuries. The Finnish experience in Western Europe and the New World is a story of migrant laborers, expatriates and specialists working abroad. The experiences of second-generation Finnish immigrants and their descendants open up new possibilities for understanding the relationship between Finland and the West. The Finnish passage westward has not always crossed national borders. Karelian evacuees headed west, as did young people from the Finnish countryside when opportunities to make a living in agriculture and forestry diminished in the post-war era.…

The Finnish experience in Western Europe and the New World is a story of migrant laborers, expatriates and specialists working abroad. But you don't have to be born in Finland to be a Finn. The experiences of second-generation Finnish immigrants and their descendants open up new possibilities for understanding the relationship between Finland and the West. The Finnish passage westward has not always crossed national borders. The legacy of these migrants is still visible in the suburbs of Finnish cities today. This edited volume sheds light on the experiences of immigrants in different parts of the world and offers insightful reflections on the art of carrying out fieldwork in the present day, when the task of locating the "field" seems to present a particular challenge for researchers.
